HOW IT WORKS

Convert WAV to OGG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload the WAV

Drag and drop your WAV files or select them from your device. PCM, float, ADPCM and mu-law WAVs are accepted.

02

Convert to OGG

Keep OGG as the output and start. The audio is encoded as Ogg Vorbis at quality 5, about 160 kbps for stereo.

03

Download the OGG

Save each .ogg file when it is ready, or download several results together as a ZIP.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

OGG

OGG is a free, open container format from Xiph.org. The .ogg files made here hold Vorbis audio, the kind game engines such as Minecraft, Godot, Unity and RPG Maker accept. VLC, Firefox, Chrome and Android play it; many car stereos and older players do not.

FILE FORMATS

WAV and OGG compared

SOURCE

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

TARGET

OGG

An .ogg file is audio in Xiph.Org's open Ogg container, usually Vorbis and sometimes Opus or FLAC. Ogg Vorbis is royalty-free, so game engines such as Unity, Godot and RPG Maker, Minecraft resource packs and many open-source apps use it. Android, Chrome and Firefox play it; older iPhones and some car stereos don't.

USE CASES

Use Cases for WAV to OGG

Practical workflows where WAV to OGG conversion is useful.

logo

Shrink game sound effects

Export sounds as WAV from your editor, then convert them to Ogg Vorbis to cut the size of game assets.

logo

Add sounds to a Minecraft resource pack

Minecraft resource packs use Ogg Vorbis. Convert your WAV recordings and place the .ogg files in the pack.

logo

Prepare RPG Maker audio

RPG Maker projects use .ogg files for background music and sound effects. Convert your WAV tracks to match.

logo

Replace sounds in a game mod

Many games load music and effects from .ogg files. Convert a WAV to swap in your own sound.

logo

Keep surround ambience in 5.1

5.1 WAVs stay 5.1 in the OGG, because Vorbis holds up to 8 channels.

logo

Cut download size for a web game

Ogg Vorbis files are far smaller than WAV, and Firefox and Chrome play them natively.

logo

Recover an unfinished recording

Recorder files whose header sizes were never filled in, for example after the recorder stopped unexpectedly, still convert.

logo

Make a stereo mix of a multitrack recording

A recorder WAV with more than 8 tracks and no speaker layout comes out as stereo, with tracks 1, 3, 5… on the left and tracks 2, 4, 6… on the right.

logo

Convert 24-bit and float DAW exports

24-bit and 32-bit float exports from a DAW convert directly, with no need to re-export them at 16-bit first.

logo

Make sounds for a Linux desktop theme

Linux desktop sound themes commonly use Ogg Vorbis files for login and notification sounds.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which WAV Files Can I Convert?

WAV files of any common bit depth and sample rate are supported.

Game sound effects

Short WAV effects for Unity, Godot and RPG Maker.

Music loops

Longer WAV tracks for games and apps.

Minecraft sounds

Resource pack audio must be Ogg Vorbis.

High sample rates

Rates above 48 kHz become 48 or 44.1 kHz.

A batch

Upload many WAVs and download the OGG files as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

OGG Not Working as Expected?

These explain most surprises.

01

Loop markers are gone

WAV loop markers aren't carried into Ogg Vorbis. Set loops in your game engine.

02

A Minecraft sound plays from one place

Minecraft only positions mono sounds in 3D. Convert a mono WAV for positional effects.

03

The file is much smaller

That's expected. Vorbis is lossy and roughly an eighth of the WAV size.

04

An iPhone won't play it

Older iOS versions don't play Ogg Vorbis.

05

A 96 kHz file is now 48 kHz

Vorbis files are capped at 48 kHz here.

06

Still not working

Check the WAV plays. A damaged file stops with a short message.
