HOW IT WORKS

Convert MP3 to ADX in three steps

A straightforward three-step workflow for the format you need.

01

Add MP3 files

Drag and drop or upload the MP3 files you want to convert to ADX.

02

Start ADX conversion

Choose ADX as the output format and start the conversion.

03

Save the result

Download each ADX file as it finishes, or collect batch results together when a zip download is available.

MP3

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format built for small files and broad playback compatibility. It works on almost every phone, browser, car stereo, media player, and editing application.

ADX

ADX is a compressed audio format from CRI Middleware used in many video games and interactive-media pipelines. It can support looping and other game-audio workflows, but compatibility depends on the target engine or toolchain.

FILE FORMATS

MP3 and ADX compared

SOURCE

MP3

The format almost every recording ends up in. MP3 is lossy and compact, around a tenth the size of uncompressed WAV at 128 kbps, and it plays on every phone, browser and editor. That makes it a great source file, but most game engines built on CRI middleware can't load it directly.

TARGET

ADX

CRI Middleware's audio format, built for games. ADX uses ADPCM compression, about a quarter the size of WAV, so it decodes cheaply during gameplay and supports seamless loops. It shipped on the Sega Dreamcast and in many later console and PC games. Its newer successor is HCA.

USE CASES

Use Cases for MP3 to ADX

When ADX fits the next step better than the original MP3.

logo

Prepare audio for an ADX-based game pipeline

Convert a working MP3 asset to ADX when a supported engine, tool, or legacy project expects that game-audio format.

logo

Prepare audio for device-specific playback

Use ADX when an embedded or legacy playback environment is built around that format.

logo

Create a test asset for an interactive project

Use the conversion to make a small ADX file for validating playback, integration, looping, or pipeline behavior.

logo

Create compatibility copies for QA

Keep the original MP3 and a converted ADX so testers can compare playback in the target environment.

logo

Test loop-ready audio in a target format

Create an ADX version and verify loop points and playback behavior in the actual destination tool or engine.

logo

Match an existing game's audio format

Convert legitimate project audio to ADX when maintaining or modding a project you are authorized to work with.

logo

Prepare replacement audio for a legacy toolchain

Use ADX when an older content pipeline cannot ingest the original MP3 file.

logo

Build a prototype sound bank input

Convert source audio to ADX as a preliminary asset for a game-audio workflow that supports it.

logo

Package approved audio for a game build

Convert the source only when the destination build pipeline specifically requires ADX and the settings are compatible.

logo

Standardize game-audio delivery

Convert approved source audio to the format used by the rest of a project's sound assets.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which Files Can I Convert to ADX?

Start with the audio you already have. You don't need a separate tool for each source format.

MP3

Upload it directly. This is the most common source for this converter.

WAV or FLAC

Supported, and the best choice. Lossless sources give the cleanest ADX because the audio is only compressed once.

AAC or M4A

Supported. Like MP3, these are lossy, so start from a lossless original if you have one.

A whole set of tracks

Add them together. They convert as one batch you can download as a ZIP or share with one D3 link.

Files over 20GB

Split or compress the audio first. Each file can be up to 20GB.

Only convert audio you own or have permission to use. Having a file doesn't automatically give you the right to put it into someone else's game.

TROUBLESHOOTING

ADX Not Playing in Your Game?

Most problems come down to settings the game expects, not the conversion itself.

01

It plays at the wrong speed or pitch

The game probably expects a different sample rate. Check the original ADX file and match its sample rate and channel count.

02

The game stays silent or crashes

Many commercial games use encrypted ADX with a game-specific key. A standard ADX file may not play in those titles.

03

The music stops instead of looping

MP3 files don't store loop points, so there's nothing to carry over. Add them in your ADX tool or game engine.

04

It sounds worse than the original

MP3 and ADX are both lossy, so the audio is compressed twice. Convert from a WAV or FLAC original instead.

05

It's much louder or quieter

Game soundtracks are usually mixed to similar levels. Compare your track's volume with the game's other audio.

06

Still not working

Make sure the new file uses the exact name and folder of the one it replaces, then test it in the actual game or build.
