HOW IT WORKS

Convert WAV to BRSTM in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your WAV file

Drag and drop a .wav file or select it from your device. For a looping BRSTM, set loop points in Wavosaur, Awave or a sampler editor first, so they are saved in the WAV's smpl chunk.

02

Convert to BRSTM

Keep BRSTM as the output format and start. The audio is encoded as 4-bit DSP-ADPCM, about 400 kbps for 44.1 kHz stereo.

03

Download the BRSTM

Download one .brstm file per WAV and play it in vgmstream or a player built on it.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. Audio editors, recorders and game audio tools such as vgmstream save WAV files, and loop editors such as Wavosaur store loop points in its smpl chunk.

BRSTM

BRSTM is the Nintendo Wii's streamed audio format (RSTM), used for background music in games such as Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It usually holds 4-bit DSP-ADPCM audio, can store a loop and can group channels into several tracks. Music modders and vgmstream-based players use it.

FILE FORMATS

WAV and BRSTM compared

SOURCE

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

TARGET

BRSTM

BRSTM is the Wii's streamed music format, holding DSP-ADPCM or PCM audio with loop points so a track repeats without a gap. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and many other Wii games use it, and custom music mods replace game tracks with new BRSTM files.

USE CASES

Use Cases for WAV to BRSTM

Practical workflows where WAV to BRSTM conversion is useful.

logo

Replace music in a Wii game mod

Make a looping BRSTM for a Mario Kart Wii or Super Smash Bros. Brawl music mod from a WAV with smpl loop points, so the song repeats from its loop start instead of stopping.

logo

Re-loop an extracted song

Move the loop points of a song in a loop editor, then convert. The BRSTM loops at the new points, with the loop start moved to the next DSP block, at most 14,336 samples later (about 0.3 s at 48 kHz, 0.45 s at 32 kHz).

logo

Edit a multi-track stream and put it back

Decode a multi-track BRSTM, such as a New Super Mario Bros. Wii or Skyward Sword stream, with our BRSTM-to-WAV tool, edit the WAV, set loop points again in a loop editor, and convert it back. Every track is kept.

logo

Mix a surround track down for the Wii

A 5.1 or 7.1 WAV with a speaker layout (channel mask) is mixed down to stereo, so a surround mix becomes a regular one-track stereo BRSTM.

logo

Convert a 96 kHz master

WAVs above 48 kHz, such as 96 or 192 kHz masters, become 48 kHz BRSTMs, with loop points rescaled to the new rate.

logo

Keep a mono sound mono

A mono WAV, such as an ambience bed or a voice clip, becomes a one-channel BRSTM instead of being doubled to stereo.

logo

Add music to a Wii homebrew game

Homebrew developers can turn their own WAV music into looping or one-shot BRSTM streams for a Wii homebrew project.

logo

Make BRSTM test files for tools

Authors of BRSTM players, parsers and modding tools can make test streams from WAVs: mono, stereo, looping or multi-track.

logo

Use sounds from an old sample library

WAVs stored as A-law, GSM, IMA ADPCM or Microsoft ADPCM, or MP3 inside WAV, convert directly without saving them as PCM first.

logo

Rescue an unfinished recording

A WAV from a crashed recording or a stream capture whose header sizes were never filled in still converts to BRSTM.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which WAV Files Can I Convert to BRSTM?

Most kinds of WAV are supported, including looped ones.

WAV with loop points

Loops in a smpl chunk are kept, so the track repeats in game.

Multi-track WAV

Multi-track WAVs stay multi-track.

PCM, float, GSM and ADPCM WAV

Common WAV encodings are read.

RF64 and Broadcast WAV

Large and broadcast WAVs work.

Mario Kart Wii and Brawl mods

Custom music for Wii games that use BRSTM.

Only convert audio you own or have permission to use. Having a file doesn't automatically give you the right to put it into someone else's game.

TROUBLESHOOTING

BRSTM Not Playing in Your Game?

Most problems come down to settings the game expects, not the conversion itself.

01

The loop point moved slightly

The loop start moves forward to the next DSP block, at most about 0.3 seconds at 44.1 or 48 kHz, while the loop length stays the same.

02

The music doesn't loop

Add loop points to a smpl chunk in Wavosaur or Awave before converting.

03

It plays at the wrong speed or pitch

The game probably expects a different sample rate. Check an original file from the game and match its rate before converting.

04

The final lap music doesn't speed up

Mario Kart Wii uses a separate _f file for the final lap. Convert a faster version of the track as well.

05

It's much louder or quieter

Compare your track's loudness with the game's other audio and adjust it before converting.

06

Still not working

Make sure the new file uses the exact name and folder of the one it replaces, then test it in the actual game or build.
