HOW IT WORKS

Convert SRT to VTT in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your SRT file

Drag and drop a .srt file or select it from your device. Its text encoding is detected automatically.

02

Convert to VTT

Keep VTT as the output format and start. Bold, italic and underline are kept, and common SRT formatting mistakes are repaired along the way.

03

Download the VTT

Download the UTF-8 .vtt file and add it to your video player or web page as a caption track.

SRT

SRT (SubRip) is the most common subtitle format: a plain-text list of numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time and one or more lines of text. Video editors, media players, TVs and YouTube read it, and it supports only simple tags such as bold, italic, underline and font color.

VTT

WebVTT (.vtt) is the W3C caption format behind the HTML5 <track> element. Browsers show it with a <video>, and web video players, YouTube and many course platforms accept it. Each cue holds its timing and text, with optional simple styling and an on-screen position.

SOURCE

SRT

SubRip Text began with the SubRip ripping tool in the early 2000s. Each subtitle is a number, a start and end time with a comma before the milliseconds, and one or more lines of text. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VLC, smart TVs, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn all accept SRT.

TARGET

VTT

Web Video Text Tracks is the W3C caption format for the <track> element in HTML5 video. Each cue has a start and end time with a dot before the milliseconds, and optional settings place the text on screen. Video platforms, lecture recordings and meeting tools such as Zoom and Teams export captions as VTT.

USE CASES

Use Cases for SRT to VTT

Practical workflows where SRT to VTT conversion is useful.

logo

Add captions to an HTML5 video

Web developers can attach the .vtt to a <video> element as a <track>. Browsers read WebVTT captions there, not SRT.

logo

Load captions into a web video player

Players such as Video.js and Plyr load WebVTT caption tracks. Convert the SRT your editor exported and point the player at the .vtt.

logo

Package subtitles for HLS streaming

HLS streams carry subtitles as WebVTT. Convert the SRT delivered with a film or series before packaging it with your streaming tools.

logo

Caption lessons on a course platform

Course platforms that ask for WebVTT captions get a file with the same text and timings as the SRT from your captioning service.

logo

Fix garbled accents in an old SRT

SRTs saved in old Windows or Asian code pages often show broken letters on the web. The conversion detects the encoding and writes UTF-8, so accents, £ and € signs and non-Latin text display correctly.

logo

Repair a badly formed SRT

Hand-edited SRTs with missing blank lines or numbers, dots instead of commas or cues out of order are repaired while converting, so the VTT plays cleanly.

logo

Keep top-of-screen subtitles in place

Subtitles marked {\an8} so they don't cover on-screen text stay at the top of the screen in the WebVTT file.

logo

Clean up SRTs made from ASS scripts

SRTs exported from fansub scripts often contain \N and \h codes. In the VTT they become real line breaks and hard spaces instead of showing as text.

logo

Publish captions in several languages

Translators often deliver one SRT per language. Add them all to one job to get a WebVTT caption track for each language.

logo

Convert a mislabeled subtitle download

Some subtitle sites serve MicroDVD files with an .srt name, and the converter recognizes the real format and converts it. A MicroDVD file that does not state its frame rate is timed at 23.976 fps, so one made for 25 fps video drifts out of sync.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which SRT Files Can I Convert?

SRT files, even badly formatted ones, are supported.

Standard SRT

From editors, downloads and rips.

Badly formatted SRT

Missing numbers, dots instead of commas and joined files are repaired.

{\an8} top-positioned lines

Keep their position in the VTT.

MicroDVD named .srt

Recognized and converted.

A batch

Upload several SRTs and download the VTT files as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

VTT Not Working?

Most issues come from features one format has and the other doesn't.

01

Colors are gone

WebVTT has no inline color without a separate stylesheet, so <font> colors are removed.

02

A MicroDVD file drifts

MicroDVD files without a stated frame rate are timed at 23.976 fps. A file made for 25 fps video will drift.

03

It says no subtitles were found

Plain text without timings can't be converted.

04

A huge subtitle was refused

A single subtitle with more than 1,000 lines is treated as damaged.

05

Accented letters look wrong

The encoding is detected automatically. A very short file whose only accented letters fit several code pages can be misread; re-save it as UTF-8 and convert again.

06

It says this isn't a text subtitle

Video files, picture-based subtitles and other binary files renamed as subtitles are refused with a message saying what they are.
