FILE FORMATS
SOURCE
Web Video Text Tracks is the W3C caption format for the <track> element in HTML5 video. Each cue has a start and end time with a dot before the milliseconds, and optional settings place the text on screen. Video platforms, lecture recordings and meeting tools such as Zoom and Teams export captions as VTT.
TARGET
SubRip Text began with the SubRip ripping tool in the early 2000s. Each subtitle is a number, a start and end time with a comma before the milliseconds, and one or more lines of text. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VLC, smart TVs, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn all accept SRT.

TROUBLESHOOTING

SRT has no standard positioning, so WebVTT cue settings such as line and align are dropped.

Automatic captions often show rolling text where each line appears twice. That comes from the source file. Download the uploader's own captions when available.

WebVTT voice tags aren't part of SRT. Add speaker names in the text if you need them.

SRT has no standard color styling, so color classes are removed.

The SRT is UTF-8. Some old players expect another encoding; re-save the SRT in their encoding.
