HOW IT WORKS

Convert SRT to ASS in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your SRT file

Drag and drop a .srt file or select it from your device. Its text encoding is detected automatically.

02

Convert to ASS

Keep ASS as the output format and start. Each subtitle becomes a Dialogue line in the Default style, and bold, italic, underline and font colors become ASS codes.

03

Download the ASS

Download the UTF-8 .ass script and use it as it is, or open it in Aegisub to restyle it.

SRT

SRT (SubRip) is the most common subtitle format: a plain-text list of numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time. It supports only simple bold, italic, underline and font color tags, and the player decides how the text looks.

ASS

ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a subtitle script format that stores styles, fonts, colors, positions and effects alongside timed dialogue. Aegisub edits it, players such as mpv, VLC and MPC-HC show it with its styling, and it is the usual styled subtitle track in MKV files.

FILE FORMATS

SOURCE

SRT

SubRip Text began with the SubRip ripping tool in the early 2000s. Each subtitle is a number, a start and end time with a comma before the milliseconds, and one or more lines of text. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VLC, smart TVs, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn all accept SRT.

TARGET

ASS

Advanced SubStation Alpha is the styled subtitle format of anime fansubs and Aegisub. An ASS script defines named styles with fonts, colors, outlines and shadows, and override tags place, animate and fade text anywhere on screen, including karaoke effects and typeset signs. VLC, mpv and MKV players render it.

USE CASES

Use Cases for SRT to ASS

Practical workflows where SRT to ASS conversion is useful.

logo

Start a styled fansub from a timed SRT

Open the ASS in Aegisub and edit the Default style or add signs, instead of timing the dialogue again from scratch.

logo

Burn subtitles into a video

FFmpeg and HandBrake burn an ASS script in with its style, so the hard-coded subtitles come out as white Arial text with a black outline at the bottom.

logo

Add a styled subtitle track to an MKV

Mux the .ass into an MKV with MKVToolNix, so players that render ASS show the subtitles with the same look.

logo

Restyle every line at once for social clips

Every subtitle uses the same Default style, a normal subtitle size at the bottom of the frame. For bigger captions on social clips, raise its font size once in Aegisub and every line follows.

logo

Keep top-of-screen subtitles

Subtitles marked {\an8} in the SRT, often moved up so they don't cover on-screen text, stay at the top in the ASS.

logo

Keep speaker colors

Colors from <font color> tags are converted to ASS color codes, so color-coded speakers in an SRT keep their colors.

logo

Restore SRTs made from ASS

SRTs exported from ASS scripts often contain \N and \h codes. Converting them back gives an ASS where they work as line breaks and hard spaces again.

logo

Fix symbols in old English SRTs

Encoding detection handles English files whose only special characters are symbols such as £, € or °, and the ASS comes out in UTF-8.

logo

Give every language the same look

Translation teams that deliver one SRT per language get ASS scripts that share the same Default style, so burned-in versions look alike in every language.

logo

Make subtitles look the same across players

The styling travels with the ASS file, so mpv and other ASS-aware players show the same font and outline instead of their own defaults.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which SRT Files Can I Convert?

SRT files in any common encoding are supported.

Standard SRT

Any SRT from editors, downloads or rips.

Formatting is carried into the script.

Files with symbols and accents

Subtitles for MKV muxing

Ready to add with MKVToolNix.

A batch

Upload several SRTs and download the ASS scripts as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

ASS Not Working?

Most issues come from features one format has and the other doesn't.

01

I want a different style

The Default style is fixed during conversion. Change the font, size or colors in Aegisub afterwards.

02

Text is too large on a small video

The style is sized for 1920x1080. Adjust PlayResX and PlayResY or the font size in Aegisub.

03

A TV doesn't show the subtitles

Many TVs don't render ASS. Keep the SRT for TVs.

04

A huge file was refused

Subtitle files over 50 MB are refused. Real subtitle files are far smaller.

05

Accented letters look wrong

The encoding is detected automatically. A very short file whose only accented letters fit several code pages can be misread; re-save it as UTF-8 and convert again.

06

It says this isn't a text subtitle

Video files, picture-based subtitles and other binary files renamed as subtitles are refused with a message saying what they are.
