HOW IT WORKS

Convert OGG to ADX in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your OGG file

Drag and drop an .ogg file or select it from your device. Ogg video files with Theora pictures work too; their soundtrack is converted.

02

Convert to ADX

Keep ADX as the output format and start. The audio is encoded as ADX 4-bit ADPCM, about 400 kbps for 44.1 kHz stereo, with the same encoder as our MP3 to ADX tool.

03

Download the ADX

Download one .adx file per OGG and play it in vgmstream or a player built on it.

OGG

OGG is an open, royalty-free container that most often holds Vorbis or Opus audio, and sometimes FLAC, Speex or Theora video. Many PC games, including RPG Maker projects, ship their music as OGG, and most media players and browsers play it.

ADX

ADX is CRI Middleware's 4-bit ADPCM audio format, used for music and voices in many Sega Dreamcast games and in later console and PC games built on CRI audio. It can store a loop. CRI-based games and vgmstream-based players read the standard header type 3 ADX this converter writes.

FILE FORMATS

OGG and ADX compared

SOURCE

OGG

An .ogg file is audio in Xiph.Org's open Ogg container, usually Vorbis and sometimes Opus or FLAC. Ogg Vorbis is royalty-free, so game engines such as Unity, Godot and RPG Maker, Minecraft resource packs and many open-source apps use it. Android, Chrome and Firefox play it; older iPhones and some car stereos don't.

TARGET

ADX

CRI Middleware's audio format, built for games. ADX uses 4-bit ADPCM, about a quarter the size of 16-bit WAV, so it decodes cheaply during gameplay and supports gapless loops. It shipped on the Sega Dreamcast and in many later console and PC games, and its newer successor is HCA.

USE CASES

Use Cases for OGG to ADX

Practical workflows where OGG to ADX conversion is useful.

logo

Replace a song in a CRI-based game

Modders swapping a song in a game that reads standard ADX can start from an OGG Vorbis or Opus file instead of converting it to WAV first.

logo

Convert RPG Maker music

RPG Maker projects store their music as OGG. The audio converts, but the LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH tags are ignored, so the ADX plays once.

logo

Use voice lines recorded as Opus

Voice recordings from chat apps and browser recorders often arrive as Ogg Opus. Each becomes an ADX at 48 kHz, the rate Opus is always decoded at.

logo

Pull the soundtrack from an Ogg video

An Ogg file with Theora video gives its soundtrack as an ADX, so you don't need to extract the audio first.

logo

Turn a 5.1 Vorbis mix into stereo ADX

5.1 and 7.1 OGG files are mixed down to stereo instead of failing, since ADX holds only mono or stereo.

logo

Convert asset-pack sound effects

Sound effects from game asset packs, which often come as OGG Vorbis, convert to ADX one by one or in a batch for a homebrew or mod project.

logo

Encode FLAC-in-Ogg recordings

Archived recordings stored as FLAC inside an Ogg container convert directly to ADX, at their original sample rate.

logo

Convert old 8 kHz Speex voice clips

Narrowband (8 kHz) Ogg Speex recordings convert to ADX at their original rate.

logo

Make ADX test files for tools

Developers testing an ADX decoder or player can make standard header type 3 ADX files from everyday OGG files.

logo

Add music to Dreamcast homebrew

Dreamcast homebrew developers can encode OGG music as ADX, the format many Dreamcast games used for their music.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which OGG Files Can I Convert to ADX?

Start from the best OGG you have.

Ogg Vorbis

The usual .ogg music and effects.

Ogg Opus and FLAC

Decoded before encoding to ADX.

8 kHz Speex

Narrowband Speex converts; wideband Speex is refused.

Ogg video

The soundtrack of a Theora video is used.

Lossless sources

If you have WAV or FLAC, use those converters for a cleaner ADX.

Only convert audio you own or have permission to use. Having a file doesn't automatically give you the right to put it into someone else's game.

TROUBLESHOOTING

ADX Not Playing in Your Game?

Most problems come down to settings the game expects, not the conversion itself.

01

It plays at the wrong speed or pitch

The game probably expects a different sample rate. Check an original file from the game and match its rate before converting.

02

The game stays silent or crashes

Many commercial games use encrypted ADX with a game-specific key. A standard ADX may not play in those titles.

03

The music stops instead of looping

The ADX has no loop points. RPG Maker-style LOOPSTART tags in the OGG are ignored; add loops in your ADX tool.

04

Wideband Speex was refused

16 and 32 kHz Speex would decode at half speed, so it's refused with a message.

05

It's much louder or quieter

Compare your track's loudness with the game's other audio and adjust it before converting.

06

Still not working

Make sure the new file uses the exact name and folder of the one it replaces, then test it in the actual game or build.
