HOW IT WORKS

Convert MOV to GIF in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your MOV clip

Drag in a short .mov from your iPhone, a Mac screen recording or a camera.

02

Convert to GIF

Start the conversion. The frames are reduced to GIF's 256-color palette and saved as a looping animation.

03

Download the GIF

Download the GIF and post it in a chat, ticket, doc or social post.

MOV

MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format, the default for iPhone recordings and a staple of Mac video editing.

GIF

GIF is a 1987 image format limited to 256 colors per frame, still used everywhere for short looping animations.

FILE FORMATS

MOV and GIF compared

SOURCE

MOV

Apple introduced QuickTime in 1991, and MOV is still what iPhones, Macs and many cameras record. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC, or ProRes for editing, with AAC or PCM sound. MOV and MP4 share the same structure, but some Windows apps, Android devices and websites handle MOV less reliably.

TARGET

GIF

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and it is still the default for reaction clips and simple animations. Each frame can use only 256 colors, transparency is on or off with no soft edges, and there is no sound. Animated GIFs get very large for their quality, which is why many sites now convert them to video behind the scenes.

USE CASES

Use Cases for MOV to GIF

When a short silent loop is easier to share than a MOV.

Attach a GIF to a GitHub issue, Jira ticket or support email.

GIFs play automatically, even in some places video won't.

GitHub READMEs show GIFs inline, not MOV.

Email clients show GIFs; most don't play video.

A looping GIF shows a swipe or tap clearly.

Many forums accept GIF uploads only.

Share a few seconds of motion design as a GIF.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MOV Files Can I Convert?

MOV clips from Apple devices and cameras are supported. Short clips work best.

iPhone and iPad clips

H.264 and HEVC phone videos convert directly.

Mac screen recordings

Recordings from the Screenshot toolbar or QuickTime Player.

ProRes and camera MOVs

Large MOVs are decoded, though short clips give the best GIFs.

Videos with sound

GIF has no audio, so the sound is left out.

Several clips

Upload a few MOVs and download the GIFs together as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

GIF Not Looking Right?

Most issues come from GIF's built-in limits.

01

The GIF is several megabytes

GIF compresses poorly. Trim the MOV to a few seconds before converting.

02

Screen text looks speckled

256 colors per frame can dither soft shadows and gradients in screen recordings.

03

There's no sound

GIF can't store audio. Keep the MOV if sound matters.

04

HDR clips look dull

GIF can't show HDR, so bright HDR iPhone footage looks flatter.

05

Motion looks choppy

GIFs use fewer frames per second than video to stay small.

06

A long recording made a huge file

Every second adds frames. Cut the clip to the moment you need.
