Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your MOV files

Drag in .mov videos from an iPhone, a Mac, a camera or an editing export.

MOV

MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format, the default for iPhone recordings and a staple of Mac video editing.

WEBM

WebM is Google's open web video format with VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Opus or Vorbis sound.

FILE FORMATS

MOV and WEBM compared

SOURCE

MOV

Apple introduced QuickTime in 1991, and MOV is still what iPhones, Macs and many cameras record. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC, or ProRes for editing, with AAC or PCM sound. MOV and MP4 share the same structure, but some Windows apps, Android devices and websites handle MOV less reliably.

TARGET

WEBM

Google launched WebM in 2010 as a royalty-free format for HTML5 video. It is a restricted form of Matroska that only allows VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Android play it, screen recorders and browser tools often save it, and older devices may not.

When a MOV needs to play natively on the web.

logo

Add a website background video

Turn a MOV clip into a lightweight WebM for a hero section or landing page.

logo

Upload product demos to a web app

Web apps often prefer royalty-free WebM over MOV.

logo

Post screen recordings to documentation

Mac screen recordings become WebM for help centers and docs.

logo

Share ProRes exports online

ProRes MOVs are huge. WebM makes them small enough for the web.

logo

Commons accepts WebM uploads but not MOV.

logo

Use clips in browser games

HTML5 games and Electron apps commonly use WebM.

logo

Keep captions for a web player

MOV text subtitles become WebVTT tracks.

Shrink a 4K iPhone clip for the web

4K is scaled to 1920 px for faster loading.

logo

Publish video in an open, royalty-free format

WebM uses only royalty-free codecs.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MOV Files Can I Convert?

MOV files from Apple devices, cameras and editors are supported.

iPhone H.264 and HEVC

Phone recordings are encoded to VP9 at up to 1920 px.

ProRes exports

Final Cut and Premiere ProRes MOVs are encoded to VP9.

Camera MOVs with several mic tracks

When each microphone is its own mono track, tracks 1 and 2 become one stereo track.

VP9 and AV1 MOV

Copied without re-encoding.

A batch

Upload several MOVs and download the WebMs as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WebM Not Playing Right?

These explain most of the surprises.

01

4K became 1080p

Pictures larger than 1920 px on the longest side are scaled down for web playback.

02

HDR looks different

VP9 web output is SDR, so HDR iPhone footage looks less vivid than on the phone.

03

Extra microphone tracks are missing

Camera MOVs with many mono mic tracks keep tracks 1 and 2 as stereo; further mic tracks are dropped.

04

Encoding is slow

VP9 encoding takes longer than copying, especially for 4K and ProRes sources.

05

It won't play on an older iPhone

Older iOS versions have limited WebM support. Use MP4 for those devices.

06

Still not working

Check that the MOV plays on its source device. A damaged file can't be converted fully.
