MOBI
MOBI is Amazon's original Kindle e-book format, based on Mobipocket. Older Kindle books, Project Gutenberg's Kindle downloads and many personal e-book collections are MOBI files. Books bought in the Kindle store usually carry DRM.
EPUB
EPUB is the open standard format for e-books. Its text reflows to fit any screen, and it opens in Apple Books, Kobo e-readers, Google Play Books and most reading apps. Amazon's Send to Kindle service also accepts EPUB.
FILE FORMATS
SOURCE
MOBI comes from Mobipocket, which Amazon bought in 2005 and used for the early Kindle. It is a reflowable e-book format with limited styling. Amazon has since moved to AZW3 and KFX, and Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI, but many older e-book libraries are still full of it.
TARGET
EPUB is maintained by the W3C and is built from HTML, CSS and images packed in a ZIP file. The text reflows to fit any screen, readers can change the font and size, and chapters appear in a table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers use it, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.
