MOBI
MOBI is Amazon's original Kindle e-book format, based on Mobipocket. Older Kindle books, Project Gutenberg's Kindle downloads and many personal e-book collections are MOBI files, which open on Kindles, in Kindle apps and in e-book tools such as calibre.
PDF is a fixed-layout document format that looks the same on every device. It opens in web browsers and PDF apps on any computer, phone or tablet, and it prints exactly as shown.
FILE FORMATS

MOBI comes from Mobipocket, which Amazon bought in 2005 and used for the early Kindle. It is a reflowable e-book format with limited styling. Amazon has since moved to AZW3 and KFX, and Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI, but many older e-book libraries are still full of it.
TARGET
Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format in 1993, and it has been an open ISO standard since 2008. A PDF fixes text, fonts, images and vector graphics onto pages, so a document prints and displays exactly as intended on any device. It is the default for sharing, printing, signing and archiving.
