HOW IT WORKS

Convert MKV to VCD in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your MKV

Drag and drop an MKV video, or browse to select one. Files up to 20GB are accepted.

02

Convert to VCD

Start the conversion. The video is encoded to Video CD MPEG-1 with MP2 stereo sound, as PAL or NTSC depending on its frame rate.

03

Download the .mpg

Download the .mpg file and add it to a Video CD project in your burning software.

MKV

MKV (Matroska) is a flexible container that can hold video, several audio tracks, subtitles, chapters and attachments in one file. It is common for movies, TV episodes and OBS screen recordings, but most VCD and DVD players cannot play it from a disc.

VCD

VCD (Video CD) is the 1990s standard for putting MPEG-1 video and MP2 sound on an ordinary CD, at 352x288 for PAL or 352x240 for NTSC. A disc holds 74-80 minutes and plays in VCD players and many DVD players. This tool delivers the video as a VCD-compliant .mpg file for burning software, not as a disc image.

SOURCE

MKV

Matroska started in 2002 as an open, royalty-free container. An MKV can carry almost any video and audio codec, several language tracks, text and picture subtitles, chapters and even attached fonts. That flexibility makes it the favorite for film backups and recorders, though iPhones, Safari and some TVs won't play it.

TARGET

VCD

The White Book Video CD standard puts about 74 to 80 minutes of MPEG-1 video on an ordinary CD. The picture is 352x288 (PAL) or 352x240 (NTSC) at a fixed 1150 kbit/s with MP2 stereo sound, roughly VHS quality. Almost every DVD player, and many older players across Asia, still reads Video CDs.

logo

Keeping a VCD collection going

Collectors who still use VCD players can author new discs from modern MKV files.

logo

logo

Screen recordings made with OBS keep picture and sound in sync, even when the recording stores no frames while the screen is still, ready to burn for a classroom disc player.

logo

PAL and NTSC picked for you

A 25 or 50 fps recording, such as a European TV broadcast, becomes a PAL .mpg, while 23.976, 30 or 60 fps videos become NTSC, with nothing to set.

Short films on a single CD

A film of up to 80 minutes fits one CD. Longer films are not split across discs, so split them yourself before burning.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MKV Files Can I Convert?

MKV files with common codecs are supported.

H.264, HEVC and VP9 MKV

Decoded and encoded to MPEG-1.

25 and 50 fps video

Becomes PAL (352x288 at 25 fps).

23.976, 24, 30 and 60 fps video

Becomes NTSC (352x240 at 29.97 fps).

5.1 sound

Mixed to stereo MP2.

Long videos

About 10.4 MB per minute, so 74 or 80 minutes fit on a CD.

TROUBLESHOOTING

VCD Not Working?

Most issues come from burning, not from the file.

01

I expected a .vcd file

A Video CD is a disc layout. Burn the .mpg as a Video CD project in your burning software.

02

The player won't read the disc

Burn as a Video CD project, not a data disc, and use a CD-R.

03

Subtitles are missing

MKV subtitles aren't burned into the picture.

04

The movie is too long for one CD

Videos aren't split across discs. Split the MKV first.

05

HDR video looks flat

HDR isn't tone-mapped, so colors can look washed out.

06

The picture is soft

VCD resolution is roughly VHS quality.
