HOW IT WORKS

Convert MKV to GIF in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your MKV clip

Drag in a short .mkv clip. Trim long videos first, because every second adds frames to the GIF.

02

Convert to GIF

Start the conversion. The frames are reduced to GIF's 256-color palette and saved as a looping animation.

03

Download the GIF

Download the GIF and post it anywhere that accepts animated images.

MKV

MKV is the open Matroska container, able to hold any codec plus many audio and subtitle tracks in one file.

GIF

GIF is a 1987 image format limited to 256 colors per frame, still used everywhere for short looping animations.

FILE FORMATS

MKV and GIF compared

SOURCE

MKV

Matroska started in 2002 as an open, royalty-free container. An MKV can carry almost any video and audio codec, several language tracks, text and picture subtitles, chapters and even attached fonts. That flexibility makes it the favorite for film backups and recorders, though iPhones, Safari and some TVs won't play it.

TARGET

GIF

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and it is still the default for reaction clips and simple animations. Each frame can use only 256 colors, transparency is on or off with no soft edges, and there is no sound. Animated GIFs get very large for their quality, which is why many sites now convert them to video behind the scenes.

USE CASES

Use Cases for MKV to GIF

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MKV Files Can I Convert?

MKV clips with any common codec are supported. Short clips work best.

OBS recordings

OBS saves MKV by default, so screen and game captures convert directly.

H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 MKV

Any common video codec in MKV is decoded.

Clips a few seconds long

Short clips give small, smooth GIFs. Longer clips grow quickly in size.

Videos with sound

GIF has no audio, so the sound is left out.

Several clips

Upload a few MKVs and download the GIFs together as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

GIF Not Looking Right?

GIF is a 1987 format, so a few limits are built in.

01

The GIF is huge

GIF stores every frame with weak compression. Trim the clip to the few seconds you need and use a smaller source if possible.

02

Colors look grainy or banded

Each GIF frame is limited to 256 colors, so gradients and skin tones are dithered.

03

There's no sound

GIF can't store audio. Keep a video version if sound matters.

04

The site won't accept the upload

Some platforms limit GIF size. A shorter clip makes a smaller GIF.

05

Motion looks choppy

GIFs use fewer frames per second than video to keep the size down.

06

The clip is the wrong part of the video

The converter turns the whole clip into a GIF. Trim to the moment you want before uploading.
