HOW IT WORKS

Convert MKV to MP3 in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Add your MKV files

Drag and drop or upload the MKV files whose sound you want as MP3.

02

Extract the soundtrack

dragdropdo takes the default audio track and encodes it as an MP3 that keeps the video's timeline. An MP3 track inside the MKV is copied as it is.

03

Download the MP3

Save each MP3 file as it finishes, or download several together as a ZIP.

MKV

MKV (Matroska) is an open container that holds video, several audio tracks, subtitles, chapters and font attachments in one file. It is common for movie and TV rips, Blu-ray remuxes and screen or game recordings.

MP3

MP3 is a compressed audio format that plays on almost every phone, browser, car stereo, media player and editing app. A standard MP3 holds mono or stereo sound, so surround tracks are mixed down to stereo.

SOURCE

MKV

Matroska started in 2002 as an open, royalty-free container. An MKV can carry almost any video and audio codec, several language tracks, text and picture subtitles, chapters and even attached fonts. That flexibility makes it the favorite for film backups and recorders, though iPhones, Safari and some TVs won't play it.

TARGET

MP3

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III has been the universal music format since the 1990s. It compresses audio by removing sounds the ear is unlikely to hear, so a song takes a few megabytes instead of tens. ID3 tags carry the title, artist and album art, and every phone, browser, car stereo and editor plays it.

USE CASES

Use Cases for MKV to MP3

Practical workflows where MKV to MP3 conversion is useful.

logo

Listen to a concert recording on the go

Save the sound of a concert or live-show MKV as MP3 and play it in the car or on a phone without the video.

logo

Replay a lecture or conference talk

Turn a recorded lecture or talk saved as MKV into an MP3 you can listen to on a commute or during a workout.

logo

Prepare dialogue for transcription

Speech-to-text and captioning tools usually take MP3 but not MKV. Extract the audio first and upload only the sound.

logo

Cut highlights from a game capture

Extract the sound of a gameplay or stream recording saved as MKV for a highlight reel. If mic and game audio sit on separate tracks, you get the default or first one.

logo

Hear a 5.1 movie track on headphones

Movies with 5.1 or 7.1 AC-3, DTS or TrueHD audio become a stereo MP3 that plays on headphones, phones and laptop speakers.

logo

Practice a language with film dialogue

Save the default audio track of a film or episode as MP3 and listen to the dialogue again on a phone or MP3 player.

logo

Keep speeches from a family video

Family videos stored as MKV can be saved as MP3 so relatives can listen to the speeches and songs on any device.

logo

Send audio to a collaborator

Give a sound editor, translator or reviewer a small MP3 instead of a multi-gigabyte MKV when they only need to hear it.

logo

Archive a broadcast recording as audio

TV or IPTV recordings saved as MKV can be kept as MP3 when only the sound matters, such as a talk show or an interview.

logo

Line the audio up with the picture again

The MP3 keeps the video's timeline, with silence where the sound starts late or drops out, so it lines up when placed back under the picture in an editor.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MKV Files Can I Convert?

MKV files with any common audio codec are supported.

AAC, AC-3, DTS and FLAC tracks

Decoded and encoded as MP3.

Opus and Vorbis tracks

From WebM-style MKVs and recordings.

OBS recordings

Game and stream recordings saved as MKV.

Concert and music videos

Keep the music as an MP3.

Multi-language MKV

The default track is used.

TROUBLESHOOTING

MP3 Not Sounding Right?

Most issues come from which audio track the video contains.

01

The wrong audio track was used

Only the default track, otherwise the first, is extracted. Other languages and commentary aren't included.

02

There's silence at the start or in the middle

Gaps in the video's sound are filled with silence so the MP3 stays in sync with the original timeline.

03

It says the video has no audio track

The video was recorded or exported without sound.

04

The commentary track was used

If commentary is set as the default track, it's the one extracted. Change the default in MKVToolNix first.

05

Surround is now stereo

MP3 holds two channels, so 5.1 and 7.1 are mixed down.

06

Still not working

Check the MKV plays in VLC. A damaged file gives only the audio that can be decoded.
