HEIC
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default, about half the size of an equivalent JPG.
WEBP
WebP is Google's web image format, with lossy and lossless modes, transparency and animation.
FILE FORMATS
SOURCE
Apple made HEIC the default camera format in iOS 11 in 2017. It wraps HEVC-compressed images in the HEIF container, so photos take roughly half the space of JPG, and it can hold 10-bit color, depth maps and several images in one file. Apple devices open it natively, while many Windows apps, websites and print services don't.
TARGET
Google introduced WebP in 2010 to make web pages lighter. It can be lossy like JPG or lossless like PNG, keeps transparency in both modes and can be animated like GIF. Every current browser displays it, though some older desktop software and print services still don't accept it.
