FILE FORMATS

HEIC and PDF compared

SOURCE

HEIC

Apple made HEIC the default camera format in iOS 11 in 2017. It wraps HEVC-compressed images in the HEIF container, so photos take roughly half the space of JPG, and it can hold 10-bit color, depth maps and several images in one file. Apple devices open it natively, while many Windows apps, websites and print services don't.

TARGET

PDF

Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format in 1993, and it has been an open ISO standard since 2008. A PDF fixes text, fonts, images and vector graphics onto pages, so a document prints and displays exactly as intended on any device. It is the default for sharing, printing, signing and archiving.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PDF Not Looking Right?

These explain most differences.

01

Text in the PDF can't be selected

The page is a photo, so it holds a picture of the text. Use an OCR tool if you need searchable text.

02

The page is tilted or has background

The photo is used as taken. Crop and straighten it in Photos before converting.

03

The PDF is large

Full-resolution phone photos make large PDF pages. Resize the photo first if size matters.

04

I wanted all photos in one PDF

Each HEIC file gives its own PDF. Merge them with a PDF tool afterwards.

05

HDR photos look flatter

HDR gain maps aren't used, so the PDF shows the standard photo.

06

Still not working

Check that the file is HEIC and wasn't cut off during transfer.
