AZW3
AZW3, also called KF8 (Kindle Format 8), is the Kindle e-book format that followed MOBI. It is built on HTML and CSS and keeps embedded fonts. AZW3 files are copied onto a Kindle over USB or opened in Kindle apps; Send to Kindle by e-mail expects EPUB instead.

The text reflows to fit any screen, readers can change the font and size, and chapters appear in a table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers use it, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.
TARGET
AZW3, also called KF8, is the Kindle format Amazon introduced in 2011. It supports CSS styling, embedded fonts and better layout than MOBI. Calibre and Kindle tools produce DRM-free AZW3 files, while books bought from the Kindle Store are usually protected.

The book is copy-protected. Only DRM-free books, such as Project Gutenberg downloads or books you made, convert.

The file's contents are checked, not just its name. A renamed file is refused with a message saying what it looks like.

Send to Kindle by email takes EPUB, not AZW3. Copy the AZW3 to the Kindle over USB instead.

Kindles sometimes show covers only for books from Amazon. The cover is inside the file.
