AZW3
AZW3, also called KF8 (Kindle Format 8), is the Kindle e-book format that followed MOBI. It is based on HTML and CSS and can embed fonts. Calibre writes AZW3 files, and Kindle e-readers and apps open them.
EPUB
EPUB is the open standard format for e-books. Its text reflows to fit any screen, and it opens in Apple Books, Kobo e-readers, Google Play Books and most reading apps. Amazon's Send to Kindle service also accepts EPUB.

AZW3, also called KF8, is the Kindle format Amazon introduced in 2011. It supports CSS styling, embedded fonts and better layout than MOBI. Calibre and Kindle tools produce DRM-free AZW3 files, while books bought from the Kindle Store are usually protected.

EPUB is maintained by the W3C and is built from HTML, CSS and images packed in a ZIP file. The text reflows to fit any screen, readers can change the font and size, and chapters appear in a table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers use it, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

The book is copy-protected. Only DRM-free books, such as Project Gutenberg downloads or books you made, convert.

The file's contents are checked, not just its name. A renamed file is refused with a message saying what it looks like.

Newer Kindle downloads are KFX, and store books carry DRM. Neither can be converted.

Fixed-layout AZW3 books become reflowable, so page-by-page layouts aren't kept.

Reading apps may override embedded fonts unless publisher fonts are turned on.
