The W3C published WOFF 2.0 in 2018. It wraps a TrueType or OpenType font with Brotli compression and font-specific transforms, typically making it 30% smaller than WOFF and far smaller than TTF. All current browsers load it, which is why Google Fonts and font services deliver WOFF2. Desktop systems can't install it directly.
TARGET
Apple developed TrueType in the late 1980s and licensed it to Microsoft, and it became the font format of both Windows and the Mac. TTF uses quadratic curves and detailed hinting instructions that keep text sharp at small sizes on screen. Every desktop system, Office suite and design app installs it.

Web fonts are often subsetted to Latin or a few characters to load faster. The TTF can only contain the glyphs in the WOFF2.

Some web builds rename fonts. Check the name in a font viewer after installing.

CFF-based web fonts are converted to TrueType curves and hinting, which can change small-size rendering a little.
