VOB
VOB (Video Object) is the file format inside the VIDEO_TS folder of a DVD-Video disc. It holds MPEG-2 video, Dolby Digital, MPEG or LPCM audio tracks, picture-based subtitles and menu data, and works together with the disc's IFO and BUP files. A movie is usually split into parts of up to 1 GB each.
MP4
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format. With H.264 video and AAC sound, as made here, it plays on iPhone and Android phones, smart TVs, Windows and Mac, every modern browser, and imports into common video editors.

Video Object files hold the movie on a DVD, inside the VIDEO_TS folder, split into parts of up to 1 GB such as VTS_01_1.VOB. They carry MPEG-2 video at 720x576 or 720x480 with stretched pixels, plus Dolby Digital, MP2 or LPCM sound and picture subtitles. Commercial discs add CSS copy protection; home-made and camcorder DVDs don't.
TARGET
MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.
