FILE FORMATS

TTF and OTF compared

SOURCE

TTF

Apple developed TrueType in the late 1980s and licensed it to Microsoft, and it became the font format of both Windows and the Mac. TTF uses quadratic curves and detailed hinting instructions that keep text sharp at small sizes on screen. Every desktop system, Office suite and design app installs it.

TARGET

OTF

OpenType was created by Microsoft and Adobe in 1996 as a successor to TrueType and Type 1. An .otf file usually holds CFF outlines with cubic curves, preferred by type designers, plus OpenType features such as ligatures, small caps and alternates. Windows, macOS and design apps install it like any other font.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which TTF Files Can I Convert?

Static TrueType fonts convert fully.

Static TTF fonts

Every glyph keeps its place, Unicode mapping and advance width.

Fonts with kerning and features

GPOS kerning, the old kern table and OpenType features are copied byte for byte.

Variable TTF fonts

Become a static OTF of the default style. The axes aren't kept.

Font families

Upload every style and download the OTF files as a ZIP.

TTC collections

Split a collection into separate TTF files first.

Check your font license allows modification before converting.

TROUBLESHOOTING

OTF Not Behaving as Expected?

These explain the differences between the TTF and the OTF.

01

Small text renders a little differently

TrueType hinting can't exist in CFF outlines, so the OTF gets new PostScript hints from FontForge's autohinter.

02

A variable font became one weight

Variable TrueType fonts become a static OTF of their default style, for example Quicksand[wght] becomes Quicksand Light.

03

A complex glyph has no hints

Glyphs with very complex outlines are left unhinted. They still display correctly.

04

The system shows two copies

Uninstall the TTF before installing the OTF, since both share the same family name.

05

A design app caches the old font

Restart the app or clear its font cache after installing.

06

Still not working

Check the OTF in a font inspector to confirm its names and glyph count.
