HOW IT WORKS

Convert OPUS to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload the OPUS file

Drag and drop your .opus files or select them from your device, for example voice notes saved from WhatsApp.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output and start. The audio is decoded to 16-bit PCM at 48 kHz with every channel kept.

03

Download the WAV

Save each WAV when it is ready, or download several results together as a ZIP.

OPUS

Opus is an open audio codec built for voice and music in small files. WhatsApp voice notes and many calling and recording apps use it, usually in an Ogg container named .opus. Many car stereos, older players and editing apps cannot open these files.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

FILE FORMATS

OPUS and WAV compared

SOURCE

OPUS

Opus is the open audio codec standardized as RFC 6716 in 2012, designed for both speech and music at very low bitrates. WhatsApp voice notes, Discord, Zoom and WebRTC calls use it, and it always decodes at 48 kHz. Browsers and Android play .opus files; many car stereos, older apps and editors don't.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for OPUS to WAV

Practical workflows where OPUS to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Edit a voice note in an audio editor

Audio editors and DAWs that do not read Opus open the WAV right away.

logo

Prepare audio for speech-to-text

Some transcription and speech analysis tools need PCM WAV. Convert the voice note first.

logo

Import Opus audio into a video editor

Many video editors do not import .opus files. A WAV goes straight onto the timeline.

logo

Analyze recordings in Python or MATLAB

Analysis scripts read 16-bit PCM WAV with standard libraries, with no Opus decoder needed.

logo

Keep every channel of surround Opus

5.1 and 7.1 Opus files keep all their channels in the WAV for mixing.

logo

Load a voice clip into a sampler

Hardware samplers and drum machines load WAV. Convert a recorded phrase to play it from pads.

logo

Convert joined recordings in full

Chained Opus files, such as recordings joined end to end, are converted completely.

logo

Convert .opus files that are really WebM

Opus audio in WebM saved with a .opus name also converts.

logo

Play clips on WAV-only soundboards

Soundboards and announcement players that take WAV only can play the converted clip.

logo

Use short sounds in a game engine

Game engines commonly use WAV for short sound effects. Convert Opus clips before importing them.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which OPUS Files Can I Convert?

Opus files from messaging apps, browsers and recorders are supported.

WhatsApp voice notes

Converted directly and kept in mono.

Chained Opus

Joined files are converted in full.

Opus in WebM named .opus

Converted like a normal .opus file.

Surround Opus

5.1 and 7.1 files keep every channel.

A batch

Upload many files and download the WAVs as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Working as Expected?

These explain most surprises.

01

The WAV is huge

WAV is uncompressed. A one-hour stereo Opus becomes about 660 MB.

02

Every file is 48 kHz

Opus always decodes at 48 kHz, so every WAV is 48 kHz.

03

Cover art is gone

WAV has no place for cover art.

04

The conversion was stopped

Files that would decode to more than 4000 times their own size are stopped as damaged or crafted.

05

A speech tool wants 16 kHz

Resample the WAV in Audacity or your tool's import settings.

06

It says there's no audio

The file is an image or another non-audio file with an .opus name.
