ODT is the OpenDocument text format, the default in LibreOffice Writer and an ISO standard used by many governments.
DOCX
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since 2007, an Office Open XML file that Word, Google Docs and Pages open.

OpenDocument Text came from OpenOffice.org and became an ISO standard in 2006. LibreOffice Writer saves ODT by default, and several governments require OpenDocument for public records. Word and Google Docs can open ODT, but layouts often shift slightly, which is why people convert to DOCX or PDF before sharing.
TARGET
Word switched to DOCX with Office 2007. A DOCX is a ZIP of XML files describing text, styles, tables, images, comments and tracked changes, standardized as ISO Office Open XML. It is the default exchange format for editable documents, accepted by Word, Google Docs, Pages, LibreOffice and most online forms.

TROUBLESHOOTING
ODT and DOCX describe layouts differently, so small shifts can happen.

If a font used in the ODT isn't installed where you open the DOCX, Word substitutes another one. Install the font or pick a standard one.

Word and LibreOffice measure lines slightly differently. Check long documents for moved breaks.

Pictures only linked to another file, not embedded, are left out. Insert them into the ODT and convert again.

LibreOffice Basic macros aren't carried into the DOCX, and they never run during conversion.

Floating frames and text boxes can move slightly. Adjust their anchors in Word.

Check that the ODT opens in LibreOffice. A damaged file fails with a message saying so.
