Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

GIF

GIF is a 1987 image format limited to 256 colors per frame, still used everywhere for short looping animations.

PNG

PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency support, the usual choice for graphics, screenshots and editing copies.

FILE FORMATS

GIF and PNG compared

SOURCE

GIF

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and it is still the default for reaction clips and simple animations. Each frame can use only 256 colors, transparency is on or off with no soft edges, and there is no sound. Animated GIFs get very large for their quality, which is why many sites now convert them to video behind the scenes.

TARGET

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so re-saving never degrades it. It supports full alpha transparency and 8 or 16 bits per channel, which makes it the standard for logos, UI graphics, screenshots and images that will be edited again. Photos as PNG are much larger than the same photo as JPG.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which GIF Files Can I Convert?

Still and animated GIFs are supported.

Animated GIFs

Every frame becomes a full PNG, numbered in playing order (-1, -2 and so on).

Optimized animations

Frames that store only the changed area are composited into full pictures.

Still GIFs

A single-frame GIF gives one PNG.

Transparent GIFs

Transparency is kept in the PNG.

Long animations

There's no frame limit, so a 173-frame GIF gives 173 PNGs.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PNGs Not What You Expected?

Animated GIFs work differently from single images.

01

I got a ZIP instead of one image

Each frame of an animation becomes its own PNG, so they're delivered together as a ZIP.

02

There are hundreds of files

Long animations have many frames, and each one becomes a PNG.

03

Colors are limited

The PNG keeps the GIF's colors exactly. It can't add colors beyond GIF's 256 per frame.

04

Edges look jagged

GIF transparency is on or off, so edges have no soft blending. That comes from the original.

05

I wanted an animated file

PNG here means still frames. Use our GIF to WEBP or GIF to MP4 converter to keep the animation.

06

Still not working

Check that the GIF plays in a browser. A damaged GIF may give fewer frames.
