HOW IT WORKS

Convert GIF to JPG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your GIF

Drag in a still or animated .gif.

02

Convert to JPG

Start the conversion. Each frame is composited the way a viewer shows it and saved as a JPG on a white background.

03

Download the JPGs

A still GIF gives one JPG. An animation gives numbered JPGs in one ZIP.

GIF

GIF is a 1987 image format limited to 256 colors per frame, still used everywhere for short looping animations.

JPG

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

FILE FORMATS

GIF and JPG compared

SOURCE

GIF

CompuServe released GIF in 1987, and it is still the default for reaction clips and simple animations. Each frame can use only 256 colors, transparency is on or off with no soft edges, and there is no sound. Animated GIFs get very large for their quality, which is why many sites now convert them to video behind the scenes.

TARGET

JPG

The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

Still GIFs

A single-frame GIF gives one JPG.

Transparent GIFs

A batch

Upload several GIFs and download everything as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

JPGs Not What You Expected?

JPG and GIF are built for different things.

01

Transparent areas are white

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white. Use PNG to keep transparency.

02

I got a ZIP

Each animation frame becomes its own JPG, so they come in a ZIP.

03

Text looks blurry

JPG blurs sharp edges a little. Use PNG for text and graphics.

04

Colors look blocky

GIFs use few colors, and JPG compression can add artifacts to flat areas.

05

I wanted the animation

JPG is a still format. Use GIF to MP4 or GIF to WEBP to keep motion.

06

Still not working

Check that the GIF opens in a browser.
