HOW IT WORKS

Convert EPS to PNG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload EPS files

Drag in one or more EPS files from your computer or phone.

02

Render the artwork

dragdropdo draws the real PostScript artwork at 300 dpi, not the small preview, and crops it to the bounding box.

03

Download the PNG

Save each PNG, or download several results together as a ZIP.

EPS

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript drawing made to be placed inside other documents. Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape and TeX tools write it, and stock vector packs and print shops still use it for logos and illustrations. An EPS can hold vector paths, text and embedded pictures, often with a small low-resolution preview image.

PNG

PNG is a lossless raster image format with full support for transparent backgrounds. It opens in every browser, image viewer, office suite and design app, which makes it a safe choice for logos, icons and web graphics.

EPS and PNG compared

SOURCE

EPS

Encapsulated PostScript was defined by Adobe in the late 1980s as a way to place vector artwork in page layouts. EPS files hold PostScript drawing commands, a bounding box and often a small preview picture. Logos, clip art and print artwork are still delivered as EPS, but browsers, phones and most apps can't display it.

TARGET

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so re-saving never degrades it. It supports full alpha transparency and 8 or 16 bits per channel, which makes it the standard for logos, UI graphics, screenshots and images that will be edited again. Photos as PNG are much larger than the same photo as JPG.

USE CASES

Use Cases for EPS to PNG

Practical workflows where EPS to PNG conversion is useful.

logo

Put a client's EPS logo on a website

Clients often send their logo only as EPS. The PNG keeps the transparent background, so the logo sits cleanly on any page color.

logo

Add vector artwork to Word and PowerPoint

Current versions of Microsoft Office no longer insert EPS images. A 300 dpi PNG goes into Word, PowerPoint or Google Slides and stays crisp on screen and in print.

logo

Check stock vector packs without Illustrator

Stock vector downloads often come as EPS. Converting them gives PNGs you can open in any image viewer to see what each file contains.

logo

Use LaTeX figures on a blog or wiki

Figures from dvips and older TeX workflows often give their bounding box at the end of the file. The PNG is still cropped exactly to the figure.

logo

Prepare print-on-demand artwork

Merch and print-on-demand sites usually ask for a PNG with a transparent background. The render is 300 dpi, up to 4000 px on the long side.

logo

Post an illustration on social media

Social networks do not accept EPS uploads. Convert the artwork to PNG and post it like any other image.

logo

Open an old EPS archive

Agencies and archivists with folders of older EPS files, including Illustrator files with a DOS preview header and CorelDRAW exports, can turn each into a PNG anyone can open.

logo

Replace a blurry EPS preview

Many apps show only the small preview stored inside an EPS. dragdropdo renders the real artwork, so text and lines come out sharp and anti-aliased.

logo

Get a usable image from a tiny icon

Small icons saved as EPS are drawn at least 1000 px on the long side, so you get a usable image instead of a thumbnail.

logo

Turn chart exports into images

Charts and diagrams saved as EPS from Inkscape or Cairo-based charting tools become PNGs with smooth, anti-aliased lines and text, ready for a report or web page.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which EPS Files Can I Convert?

EPS files from Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDRAW and TeX tools are supported.

Illustrator EPS

Old and new versions.

Inkscape and Cairo EPS

Vector exports from open-source tools.

TeX and dvips output

Including '(atend)' bounding boxes.

EPS without a header

PostScript that never calls showpage works too.

Multi-page EPS

One PNG per page.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PNG Not Looking Right?

These explain most differences.

01

The PNG isn't the size I expected

Artwork is rendered at 300 dpi with the long side kept between 1000 and 4000 px.

02

The embedded preview wasn't used

The real PostScript is rendered instead of the small TIFF or WMF preview.

03

The artwork is on a full page

PostScript with no bounding box is drawn on a full default-size page.

04

It came out empty

Completely empty results fail with a message. Check the file in a vector app.

05

It was stopped after 10 minutes

Very complex PostScript is stopped if it's still running after 10 minutes.

06

It says the file is protected

Password-protected files can't be rendered.
