FILE FORMATS

DOCX and EPUB compared

SOURCE

DOCX

Word switched to DOCX with Office 2007. A DOCX is a ZIP of XML files describing text, styles, tables, images, comments and tracked changes, standardized as ISO Office Open XML. It is the default exchange format for editable documents, accepted by Word, Google Docs, Pages, LibreOffice and most online forms.

TARGET

EPUB

EPUB is maintained by the W3C and is built from HTML, CSS and images packed in a ZIP file. The text reflows to fit any screen, readers can change the font and size, and chapters appear in a table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers use it, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

Which DOCX Files Can I Convert?

DOCX files from Word, Google Docs and other editors are supported.

Documents that use Heading 1, Heading 2 and so on give the best chapters.

Google Docs exports

Download as .docx from Google Docs and convert.

Documents with images

Pictures are included in the EPUB.

Word footnotes become linked notes in the e-book.

Older .doc files

Save as .docx in Word first, or use our DOC to DOCX converter.

TROUBLESHOOTING

EPUB Not Looking Right?

E-books follow document structure, not page layout.

01

There are no chapters

Chapters come from Word's Heading styles. Text that is only bold or large isn't treated as a heading.

02

Headers, footers and page numbers are gone

E-books have no fixed pages, so those elements aren't used.

03

Text boxes or columns look different

Page-layout features don't exist in reflowable e-books. Keep important text in the main body.

04

My font isn't used

Reading apps use their own fonts unless the reader changes them. That is normal for EPUB.

05

There is no cover

Add a cover image in your publishing platform or e-book editor after converting.

06

A store rejected the file

Stores run their own checks. Fix the issue they report and convert again.
