HOW IT WORKS

Convert CBR to PDF in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Add your CBR

Drag and drop or upload a CBR comic. RAR 4 and RAR 5 archives work, and so do CBR files that are really ZIP or 7z archives.

02

Convert to PDF

Keep PDF as the output format and start the conversion. Pages are sorted in natural order, so page 2 comes before page 10. Typical comics take well under a second.

03

Download the PDF

Download one PDF with the whole comic and read it in any PDF app on a phone, tablet or computer.

CBR

CBR (comic book RAR) is a RAR archive of page pictures, usually JPEG or PNG and sometimes sorted into chapter folders, that comic and manga reader apps show as a book. Many files named .cbr are really ZIP or 7z archives.

PDF

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that shows each page the same way on every device. It opens in web browsers and in PDF apps on phones, tablets and computers, so a comic in PDF needs no comic reader app.

FILE FORMATS

CBR and PDF compared

SOURCE

CBR

A CBR is a comic book archive: a RAR file of page pictures in reading order, renamed so comic readers recognize it. CBR was the common format of scanned comics and manga. RAR needs extra software on most systems, and many files named .cbr are actually ZIP or 7z archives.

TARGET

PDF

Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format in 1993, and it has been an open ISO standard since 2008. A PDF fixes text, fonts, images and vector graphics onto pages, so a document prints and displays exactly as intended on any device. It is the default for sharing, printing, signing and archiving.

USE CASES

Use Cases for CBR to PDF

Practical workflows where CBR to PDF conversion is useful.

logo

Read comics without a comic app

Open a CBR in the PDF viewer that phones, tablets and computers already have, instead of installing a comic reader.

logo

Show manga spreads in manga order

Manga marked right-to-left in its ComicInfo.xml is flagged right-to-left in the PDF, so readers that support it, such as Adobe Acrobat in two-page view, place facing pages in manga order.

logo

Jump between chapters

In a collected volume with one folder per chapter, every chapter becomes a PDF bookmark you can jump to.

logo

Read webtoon strips on a computer

Each long webtoon strip picture becomes one tall page at A4 width, so it scrolls in one piece in a PDF viewer.

logo

Keep double-page spreads whole

Wide spread pictures get landscape pages instead of being squeezed onto a portrait page.

logo

Keep Japanese, Chinese and Korean chapter names

Chapter folders named in Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Russian keep readable names in the bookmarks, even when a Windows ZIP tool stored them without Unicode, with a few exceptions such as Chinese names that use rare characters.

logo

Keep the original art quality

JPEG pages are embedded unchanged and PNG pages losslessly, so the artwork in the PDF matches the pictures in the archive.

logo

Share your own comic

Comic artists and zine makers send a single PDF to readers or reviewers who don't use comic apps.

logo

Archive scanned comics with their details

Collectors keep scanned issues as PDFs, with the title and author taken from the comic's ComicInfo.xml.

logo

Open WebP, AVIF or HEIC pages anywhere

Comics with WebP, AVIF, HEIC or JPEG 2000 pages are converted into a PDF that any PDF viewer opens.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PDF Not Reading Right?

These explain most differences between the original and the converted book.

01

It says only DRM-free books can be converted

The book is copy-protected. Only DRM-free books, such as Project Gutenberg downloads or books you made, convert.

02

It says the file isn't really this format

The file's contents are checked, not just its name. A renamed file is refused with a message saying what it looks like.

03

It says the archive is password-protected

Password-protected archives can't be opened. Extract the pages yourself and pack them without a password.

04

It says this is one part of a multi-part RAR

A single part such as name.part1.rar is incomplete. Extract all parts with a RAR tool and pack the pages into one archive.

05

Pages are out of order

Pages follow file-name order. Rename pages with leading zeros, such as 001, 002, if numbering is inconsistent.

06

The PDF is large

Each page picture is included at full size.
