HOW IT WORKS

Convert CBR to CBZ in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Add your CBR

Drag and drop or upload a CBR comic. RAR 4, RAR 5 and CBR files that are really ZIP or 7z archives all work.

02

Repack as CBZ

Keep CBZ as the output format and start the conversion. The pictures move into a ZIP archive as they are, in reading order.

03

Download the CBZ

Download the CBZ and open it in your comic reader or add it to your comic library.

CBR

CBR (comic book RAR) is a digital comic stored as a RAR archive of page pictures, usually JPEG or PNG. Comic and manga reader apps show it as a book. Many files named .cbr are really ZIP or 7z archives with the wrong name.

CBZ

CBZ (comic book ZIP) is a ZIP archive of page pictures that comic and manga readers show as a book. ZIP support is built into Windows, macOS, Linux and most programming languages, so CBZ files are easier to open, edit and process than RAR-based CBR files.

FILE FORMATS

CBR and CBZ compared

SOURCE

CBR

A CBR is a comic book archive: a RAR file of page pictures in reading order, renamed so comic readers recognize it. CBR was the common format of scanned comics and manga. RAR needs extra software on most systems, and many files named .cbr are actually ZIP or 7z archives.

TARGET

CBZ

A CBZ is a comic book archive built on ZIP: page pictures in reading order, usually JPEG or PNG, sometimes with chapter folders and a ComicInfo.xml file. Because ZIP is open and universal, CBZ works in nearly every comic reader, including Kavita, Komga, Calibre and Panels.

USE CASES

Use Cases for CBR to CBZ

Practical workflows where CBR to CBZ conversion is useful.

logo

Use readers that only open CBZ

Some comic readers and library apps handle ZIP-based CBZ files but not RAR. Repacking lets those apps open the comic.

logo

Edit comic metadata

Add or fix a ComicInfo.xml file with ordinary ZIP tools, which can write ZIP archives but usually not RAR.

logo

Keep the exact page quality

Pictures are copied byte for byte and never re-encoded, so every page is identical to the original.

logo

Fix garbled chapter names

Most folder names that a Windows or Mac ZIP tool stored without Unicode, such as Japanese 第1話, Chinese 第1话 or Korean 제1화, are written back as readable names.

logo

Clean out junk files

__MACOSX folders and .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and desktop.ini files are dropped, so only the comic's own files are left.

logo

Standardize a mixed collection

Files named .cbr that are really ZIP or 7z archives become proper CBZ files, so a collection has one consistent format.

logo

Process comics in scripts

Developers who batch-process comics can read CBZ files with standard ZIP libraries, without installing unrar.

logo

Keep chapter folders in a volume

A volume with one folder per chapter keeps that structure, so readers that show folders still list each chapter.

logo

Archive in an open format

Archivists prefer ZIP, an open and widely supported format, to RAR, which only RAR's own software can create.

logo

Keep series details for a library app

ComicInfo.xml is kept, so the series, title and issue details stored in it still show in comic library apps after repacking.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which CBR Files Can I Convert?

Mislabelled CBR

Files named .cbr that are really ZIP or 7z.

Manga with chapter folders

Folders and file names are kept, including Japanese, Chinese and Korean names.

JPEG, PNG and WebP pages

Stored as they are, with no re-encoding.

Archives over 4 GB unpacked

Refused, along with archives containing symbolic links.

TROUBLESHOOTING

CBZ Not Reading Right?

These explain most differences between the original and the converted book.

01

It says only DRM-free books can be converted

The book is copy-protected. Only DRM-free books, such as Project Gutenberg downloads or books you made, convert.

02

It says the file isn't really this format

The file's contents are checked, not just its name. A renamed file is refused with a message saying what it looks like.

03

It says the archive is password-protected

Password-protected archives can't be opened. Extract the pages yourself and pack them without a password.

04

It says this is one part of a multi-part RAR

A single part such as name.part1.rar is incomplete. Extract all parts with a RAR tool and pack the pages into one archive.

05

The CBZ isn't smaller

Pictures are already compressed and are stored as they are, so the size stays about the same.

06

A few folder names look garbled

Most names are made readable, but a few unusual encodings can't be recovered.
