HOW IT WORKS

Convert XWM to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your XWM file

Drag and drop an .xwm file, such as Skyrim music extracted from the game's archives, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. The xWMA audio is decoded to uncompressed 16-bit PCM.

03

Download the WAV

Download one WAV per .xwm. It opens in Audacity, Reaper, Adobe Audition, other DAWs and most media players.

XWM

XWM (xWMA) is Microsoft's compressed audio format for XAudio2, built on Windows Media Audio. Skyrim stores its music in .xwm files and the audio of its .fuz voice lines as xWMA, and other XAudio2 games use it too. Common media players don't open .xwm files.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

FILE FORMATS

XWM and WAV compared

SOURCE

XWM

xWMA is the compressed audio format of Microsoft's XAudio2, based on WMA. Skyrim stores its music and voice as .xwm, and other XAudio2 games use it too. Windows Media Player doesn't open these files, so modders use converters to listen to or edit them.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for XWM to WAV

Practical workflows where XWM to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Edit Skyrim music in a DAW

Load a track into Audacity, Reaper or FL Studio as a WAV to cut, extend or remix it.

logo

Prepare audio for a music mod

Start from the original track as a WAV, edit it, then encode the result back to xWMA with your modding tools.

logo

Clean up voice lines for a fan dub

Run dialogue through noise reduction or EQ in an editor that works with WAV.

logo

Sample game music and ambience

Drop music stingers and ambient loops into a sampler or DAW that works best with uncompressed WAV.

logo

Compare against another rip

The WAV matches an independent decode to within 16-bit rounding, so it works as a clean reference when checking other copies of a track.

logo

Transcribe dialogue

Feed WAV voice lines to a transcription or subtitle tool that can't read .xwm files.

logo

Archive a game soundtrack as WAV

Keep a game's music as standard WAV files that audio software will open for years to come.

logo

Recover audio from a damaged file

A cut-short or damaged .xwm gives only the audio that is in it, rather than a WAV padded with silence to the length its header claims.

logo

Edit game audio in a video project

Bring tracks into a video editor that prefers WAV for its audio timeline.

logo

Analyze a track's loudness or spectrum

Measure loudness or look at the frequencies of a track in Audacity, iZotope RX or Sonic Visualiser.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

A file came out short

A cut-off XWM gives only the audio actually in the file.

02

I have a .fuz voice file

Use our FUZ to MP3 converter for voice files with lip-sync data.

03

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really XWM audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

04

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.

05

I want to put edited audio back in the game

Re-encode the WAV to xWMA with a Bethesda modding tool.

06

Still not working

Extract the file again from the game's archive and retry.
