HOW IT WORKS

Convert XMA to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your XMA file

Drag and drop an .xma file extracted from an Xbox 360 game, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. The XMA audio is decoded to uncompressed 16-bit PCM, with every channel kept.

03

Download the WAV

Download one WAV per .xma. It opens in Audacity, Reaper, Adobe Audition, other DAWs and most media players.

XMA

XMA is Microsoft's compressed audio format for the Xbox 360, a variant of WMA Pro, and XMA2 is its later revision. Xbox 360 games store music, voice and effects as .xma files, usually at 48 kHz, sometimes with several streams or loop points. PC media players can't open them.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

XMA and WAV compared

SOURCE

XMA

XMA is Microsoft's audio codec for the Xbox 360, a WMA Pro relative that the console decodes in hardware. Xbox 360 games store music, voice and effects as XMA or XMA2, usually at 48 kHz and sometimes with several streams or loop points. PCs and phones can't play it without vgmstream.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for XMA to WAV

Practical workflows where XMA to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Edit Xbox 360 game music

Load a decoded track into Audacity, Reaper or FL Studio as a WAV to cut, extend or remix it.

logo

Preserve Xbox 360 game audio

Keep a game's music, voice and effects as standard WAV files that open on any computer.

logo

Decode early Xbox 360 releases

Early .xma files that store their XMA2 header in a 'fmt ' chunk, which common decoders reject, are repaired automatically and decode.

logo

Work with multi-stream tracks

A multi-stream XMA, such as a 3-channel file built from two streams, comes out as one WAV with every channel in order.

logo

Compare Xbox 360 and later releases

Decode the Xbox 360 version of a track and compare it with a PC release or remaster in an editor.

logo

Sample game audio for music

Drop effects and music stingers into a sampler or DAW that works best with uncompressed WAV.

logo

Transcribe dialogue for a fan translation

Fan translators can feed decoded voice lines to a transcription tool or listen to them in any player.

logo

Convert xWMA saved as .xma

Some PC ports save xWMA audio with an .xma extension. Those files convert to WAV too.

logo

Get a finished length from looping music

A track with an inner loop comes out as the intro, the loop, one more pass and a 10-second fade, ready for a video edit.

logo

Analyze a track's loudness or spectrum

Measure loudness or look at the frequencies of a track in Audacity, iZotope RX or Sonic Visualiser.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

02

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.

03

A cut-off file fails

Truncated XMA files fail instead of giving partial audio.

04

It says the header claims too much audio

The file is a bad rip. Extract it again.

05

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really XMA audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

06

The WAV plays as surround

Multichannel WAVs play as surround in some players. Split channels in an editor if needed.
