XLSX
XLSX is Excel's default workbook format since 2007, an XML-based file holding up to 1,048,576 rows per sheet.
CSV
CSV is plain-text tabular data, one row per line with values separated by commas, readable by every spreadsheet and database.

Excel 2007 introduced XLSX, part of the Office Open XML standard. It holds multiple sheets with formulas, formatting, charts, tables and pivot tables, up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet, and it can't contain macros (that needs .xlsm). Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice all open it.
TARGET
Comma-separated values is the simplest way to move a table between programs. Each line is a row, and quotes protect values that contain commas or line breaks. CSV has no formulas, formatting or multiple sheets, which is exactly why databases, CRMs, accounting tools and data scripts all import it.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Most issues appear when the CSV is opened again, not during conversion.

Excel strips leading zeros when it opens a CSV. Import the file with the column set to Text, or use Google Sheets.

CSV holds values only, with no formatting, colors, formulas or charts.

Each sheet becomes its own CSV, because a CSV can hold only one table.

CSV stores dates as text. The program that opens the CSV decides how to show them.

Open the CSV through Excel's Data > From Text/CSV import and choose UTF-8.

Password-protected workbooks need the password removed before converting.
