WMV
WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video format from the Windows Media era, usually stored with WMA sound in an ASF file. Older versions of Windows Movie Maker saved WMV by default, so many home videos, slideshows and 2000s downloads are in this format.
AMV
AMV is the video format of low-cost MP3/MP4 players built on Actions Semiconductor chips. It pairs a simplified Motion-JPEG picture with IMA-ADPCM sound at small sizes, usually 320x240 or less. On a computer, FFmpeg-based players such as VLC can open it. It is unrelated to anime music videos, which share the abbreviation.

Windows Media Video arrived in 1999 and was Microsoft's answer to RealVideo and QuickTime. WMV files use Microsoft's own codecs, up to WMV9 and VC-1, with WMA sound inside the ASF container. They play in Windows Media Player, while Macs, iPhones, Android and browsers need extra software.
TARGET
AMV is a stripped-down variant of AVI created for budget portable players, the kind often sold as MP4 players. It uses a simplified Motion JPEG for the picture and IMA ADPCM for sound, so tiny chips can decode it. Resolution and frame rate are low, typically 160x120 to 320x240 at 12 to 16 fps.
