HOW IT WORKS

Convert TTML to SRT in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your TTML file

Drag and drop a .ttml file, including DFXP, EBU-TT-D and IMSC captions, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to SRT

Keep SRT as the output format and start. Clock times, frames, ticks and offsets are converted, and nested <div> offsets and par/seq timing are applied.

03

Download the SRT

Download a UTF-8 .srt file that plays in VLC, on TVs and in video editors.

TTML

TTML (Timed Text Markup Language) is the W3C XML format for captions. Its profiles, including DFXP, SMPTE-TT, EBU-TT-D and IMSC, are used for streaming and broadcast deliveries, and Apple Music uses TTML for synced lyrics.

SRT

SRT (SubRip) is the most widely supported subtitle format: a plain-text list of numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time. VLC, smart TVs, video editors and YouTube read it, and it supports only simple tags such as bold, italic and underline.

SOURCE

TTML

Timed Text Markup Language is the W3C's XML caption format, also known as DFXP. Streaming services, broadcasters (EBU-TT-D), SMPTE-TT and IMSC profiles and Apple Music lyrics all build on it. TTML supports styling, regions and several ways of writing times, which makes it powerful but hard for editors and TVs to read.

TARGET

SRT

SubRip Text began with the SubRip ripping tool in the early 2000s. Each subtitle is a number, a start and end time with a comma before the milliseconds, and one or more lines of text. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VLC, smart TVs, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn all accept SRT.

USE CASES

Use Cases for TTML to SRT

Practical workflows where TTML to SRT conversion is useful.

logo

Use streaming captions with a video file

Captions delivered as TTML or DFXP become an SRT that VLC or a TV player shows next to the video.

logo

Review a broadcast subtitle delivery

Editors and QC staff receiving EBU-TT-D or IMSC files get every caption with its start and end time in plain text, which is far easier to read than XML.

logo

Make a lyric video from Apple Music lyrics

An Apple Music or iTunes lyrics TTML becomes an SRT with one subtitle per lyric line, ready for a lyric video.

logo

Import captions into a video editor

Editors cutting promos from broadcast material can import the captions as SRT into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

logo

Re-post a video on social platforms

Facebook and LinkedIn take SRT caption files. Convert the TTML that came with the video before you upload.

logo

Translate captions without the markup

Translators get readable SRT text instead of XML tags, styles and regions.

logo

Archive captions next to recordings

Archivists keeping recorded broadcasts can store a plain-text SRT with each recording, timed to the millisecond.

logo

Convert captions from an older web player

DFXP files from older web video players, including the 2006 DFXP namespace, are read and converted.

logo

Check captions timed in frames or ticks

Files timed in frames, such as 29.97 fps, or in ticks, such as a 10 MHz tick rate, become exact SRT times you can check against the video.

logo

Keep word-by-word captions in order

Captions that reveal one word at a time in a TTML player keep that reveal in the SRT, as a sequence of subtitles.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which TTML Files Can I Convert?

TTML and DFXP files from streaming and broadcast sources are supported.

Streaming service captions

TTML and DFXP downloads.

Broadcast profiles

EBU-TT-D, SMPTE-TT and IMSC text profiles.

Old DFXP namespaces

Files using the 2006 namespace or tt: prefixes.

Apple Music lyrics

Line-timed and word-timed lyrics.

UTF-8 and UTF-16

Both encodings are read.

TROUBLESHOOTING

SRT Not Working?

Most issues come from features one format has and the other doesn't.

01

Regions and styles are gone

SRT has no regions or styling, so TTML layout is removed.

02

Timings look shifted

TTML can time captions by frames, ticks or clock time. All are converted, but check the video's frame rate if captions seem early or late.

03

Image-based TTML failed

IMSC image profiles hold pictures of text, which would need OCR.

04

A huge file was refused

Subtitle files over 50 MB are refused. Real subtitle files are far smaller.

05

Accented letters look wrong

The encoding is detected automatically. A very short file whose only accented letters fit several code pages can be misread; re-save it as UTF-8 and convert again.

06

It says this isn't a text subtitle

Video files, picture-based subtitles and other binary files renamed as subtitles are refused with a message saying what they are.
