TS (MPEG transport stream) is the format digital TV is broadcast in, used by DVB, ATSC and IPTV. Set-top boxes, TV tuners and PVR apps save recordings as .ts files with MPEG-2, H.264 or HEVC video, several sound tracks, subtitles, teletext and program guide data. HLS streaming also uses .ts segments.
MP4
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format. With H.264 video and AAC sound, as made here, it plays on iPhone and Android phones, smart TVs, Windows and Mac, every modern browser, and imports into common video editors.

The MPEG transport stream was built for broadcasting, so it keeps playing through signal errors. TV tuners, set-top box recordings, IPTV captures and downloaded HLS streams are .ts files, usually holding MPEG-2 or H.264 video with AAC, MP2 or AC-3 sound. Phones, Safari and many editors don't open them directly.
TARGET
MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.
