FILE FORMATS

TIFF and PDF compared

SOURCE

TIFF

Created by Aldus in 1986 and now maintained by Adobe, TIFF is the working format of scanners, fax software, print shops and photo archives. It can be uncompressed or use LZW, ZIP or JPEG compression, supports 16-bit color and transparency, and can store many pages in one file. Browsers other than Safari don't display it.

TARGET

PDF

Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format in 1993, and it has been an open ISO standard since 2008. A PDF fixes text, fonts, images and vector graphics onto pages, so a document prints and displays exactly as intended on any device. It is the default for sharing, printing, signing and archiving.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PDF Not Looking Right?

These explain most differences.

01

Text can't be selected

Scanned pages are pictures. Run OCR in a PDF tool if you need searchable text.

02

The job failed on one page

A page that can't be decoded stops the job and is named in the message. Re-scan or re-export it.

03

The PDF is large

High-resolution scans make large pages. Scan at 300 dpi for documents to keep size down.

04

Pages are a different size

Each page keeps the size of its TIFF page.

05

Colors look different

CMYK TIFFs are shown in RGB, which can shift colors slightly.

06

Still not working

Check the TIFF opens in a viewer and wasn't cut off.
