HOW IT WORKS

Convert SUB to SRT in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your SUB file

Drag and drop a text .sub subtitle file or select it from your device. Picture-based DVD VobSub .sub files can't be converted.

02

Convert to SRT

Keep SRT as the output format and start. The type of .sub is detected, and frame numbers are turned into times using the frame rate stated in the file.

03

Download the SRT

Download a UTF-8 .srt file that plays in VLC, on TVs and in video editors.

SUB

SUB is an extension shared by several subtitle formats. Text .sub files are usually MicroDVD, which times each line by video frame numbers, SubViewer, which uses times, or MPSub, which uses seconds or frames. DVD VobSub .sub files are different: they store pictures of the subtitles, usually alongside an .idx file.

SRT

SRT (SubRip) is the most widely supported subtitle format: a plain-text list of numbered subtitles, each with a start and end time. VLC, smart TVs, video editors and YouTube read it, and it supports only simple tags such as bold, italic and underline.

FILE FORMATS

SUB and SRT compared

SOURCE

SUB

Text .sub files come in several flavors: MicroDVD, which times lines by frame number like {120}{180}, SubViewer, which uses clock times, and MPSub. They were common with DivX and Xvid films in the 2000s. Frame-based files only line up when the video's frame rate matches. Binary VobSub .sub files are a different, picture-based format.

TARGET

SRT

SubRip Text began with the SubRip ripping tool in the early 2000s. Each subtitle is a number, a start and end time with a comma before the milliseconds, and one or more lines of text. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, VLC, smart TVs, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn all accept SRT.

USE CASES

Use Cases for SUB to SRT

Practical workflows where SUB to SRT conversion is useful.

logo

Play old movie subtitles on a TV

TVs and streaming boxes that don't handle MicroDVD read SRT. Convert the .sub that came with an older movie file.

logo

Modernize a subtitle archive

Collections from the early 2000s are full of MicroDVD .sub files. Converting them gives standard SRTs with real timings.

logo

Fix Polish and Cyrillic letters

Polish subtitles in Windows-1250 and Bulgarian or Russian ones in Windows-1251 are detected and written as UTF-8, so letters such as ł and ż and Cyrillic text display correctly.

logo

Add subtitles to an MKV

Muxing tools such as MKVToolNix take SRT. Convert a MicroDVD .sub first, then add it as a subtitle track.

logo

Bring subtitles into a video editor

Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve import SRT captions, so convert the .sub to place the subtitles on your timeline.

logo

Keep italic lyrics and voice-overs

MicroDVD italics marked with / or {y:i} become SRT italics, so song lyrics and off-screen voices stay italic.

logo

Check what kind of .sub you have

A DVD VobSub .sub is refused with a message saying it stores pictures and needs OCR, so you know it is not a text subtitle file.

logo

Convert SubViewer files from old editors

SubViewer 1 and 2 files made by older subtitle editors become standard SRT.

logo

Convert MPlayer MPSub files

MPSub files, the subtitle format of MPlayer, are converted whether they are timed in seconds or in frames.

logo

Retime or translate in a modern editor

Subtitle editors and translation tools open SRT. Start from a converted file instead of an old frame-based .sub.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which SUB Files Can I Convert?

Text .sub subtitle files are supported.

MicroDVD

{frame}{frame}text files from DivX-era films.

SubViewer 1 and 2

Clock-timed .sub files.

MPSub

MPlayer's subtitle format.

Files that state their frame rate

MicroDVD files with a frame-rate line are timed exactly.

VobSub picture subtitles

Not supported. Those .sub files hold pictures, not text.

TROUBLESHOOTING

SRT Not Working?

Most issues come from features one format has and the other doesn't.

01

Subtitles drift out of sync

MicroDVD times lines by frame. A file without a stated frame rate is timed at 23.976 fps, so one made for 25 fps video drifts.

02

A .sub with an .idx file fails

That's VobSub, a picture format that would need OCR.

03

Formatting codes appear

Most MicroDVD codes are removed; unusual ones may need cleaning in an editor.

04

A huge file was refused

Subtitle files over 50 MB are refused. Real subtitle files are far smaller.

05

Accented letters look wrong

The encoding is detected automatically. A very short file whose only accented letters fit several code pages can be misread; re-save it as UTF-8 and convert again.

06

It says this isn't a text subtitle

Video files, picture-based subtitles and other binary files renamed as subtitles are refused with a message saying what they are.
