HOW IT WORKS

Convert SCD to WAV in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your SCD file

Drag and drop a .scd file extracted from a Square Enix game, or select it from your device.

02

Convert to WAV

Keep WAV as the output format and start. Each sound in the file is decoded to 16-bit PCM.

03

Download the WAVs

A file with one sound gives one WAV. A bank gives one WAV per sound, numbered in bank order and zipped on the download page.

SCD

SCD (Sound Container Data) is the audio format of Final Fantasy XIV, the Final Fantasy XIII series and other Square Enix games. One file can hold one or more sounds, usually Ogg Vorbis or ADPCM audio.

WAV

WAV is a RIFF-based audio format commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is easy to edit and broadly supported in recording, broadcast, and desktop audio workflows.

FILE FORMATS

SCD and WAV compared

SOURCE

SCD

SCD is Square Enix's sound container, used in Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XIII, Type-0, Kingdom Hearts HD and Dragon Quest X. One SCD can hold several sounds with loop points, stored as Ogg Vorbis music, MS-ADPCM effects or PS-ADPCM. Final Fantasy XIV scrambles its Ogg data so normal players can't read it.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

USE CASES

Use Cases for SCD to WAV

Practical workflows where SCD to WAV conversion is useful.

logo

Remix Final Fantasy XIV music

Load FFXIV tracks as WAV into Reaper, FL Studio or Ableton Live to remix or sample them.

logo

Edit sound effects for an FFXIV mod

Decode the original effects or voice lines to WAV, edit them in an audio editor, then pack your versions back with a modding tool.

logo

Sample Square Enix sound effects

An SCD effect bank becomes separate numbered WAVs that drop straight into a sampler.

logo

Clean up voice lines

Run noise reduction or level matching on game dialogue in Audacity or Adobe Audition, starting from uncompressed PCM.

logo

Hear a looped battle theme in full

Music that loops over part of the track comes out with one more pass of the loop and a 10 s fade-out. A whole-track loop plays once.

logo

Use game audio as a video source

Import WAVs from FFXIII, Type-0 or Kingdom Hearts HD into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve as clean audio for an edit.

logo

Archive a game's sound data

Keep uncompressed WAV copies of a game's .scd files so they open in any audio software later on.

logo

Re-encode to another format once

Use the WAV as a clean intermediate for FLAC, AAC or Opus in your own encoder, so the audio is compressed only one more time.

logo

Open PS3-era SCD files in an editor

Older PS3 releases store sounds as big-endian PS-ADPCM .scd files, and these decode to WAV the same way.

logo

Build a fan soundtrack album

Fans compiling a soundtrack can normalize and tag tracks starting from WAV instead of a re-compressed MP3.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which SCD Files Can I Convert?

Square Enix SCD files are supported.

Final Fantasy XIV

Including its scrambled Ogg Vorbis music.

Final Fantasy XIII and Type-0

Music and sound effect SCD files.

Kingdom Hearts HD and Dragon Quest X

SCD audio from these games.

Effect banks

One WAV per sound.

PS3 SCD

Big-endian PS-ADPCM files decode too.

Only convert audio from games you own or have permission to use.

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Sounding Right?

Game audio works differently from normal music files, which explains most surprises.

01

I got a ZIP of numbered files

The file held several sounds, so each one became its own WAV, numbered in bank order. Sounds have numbers, not names.

02

The track repeats and fades out

Looping game music is rendered the way the game plays it: the looped section plays once more, then fades out over 10 seconds. A loop covering the whole track plays once.

03

It says the file can't be decoded

The file is damaged, isn't really SCD audio, or was extracted with the wrong tool. Extract it again from the game files and retry.

04

It says the file is damaged

Cut-off files fail instead of giving silence. Extract the file again.

05

Empty slots are missing

Empty or dummy slots are skipped.

06

The WAV is very large

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for 44.1 kHz stereo and more for higher rates or extra channels.
