RTF

RTF is Microsoft's Rich Text Format, a plain-text markup for formatted documents that almost every word processor reads.

DOCX

DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since 2007, an Office Open XML file that Word, Google Docs and Pages open.

FILE FORMATS

RTF and DOCX compared

SOURCE

RTF

Rich Text Format was released by Microsoft in 1987 to move formatted text between programs. It stores fonts, bold and italic, tables and pictures as readable control codes. WordPad and Mac TextEdit save it by default, and many legal, medical and business systems still export reports as RTF. Microsoft stopped updating the spec in 2008.

TARGET

DOCX

Word switched to DOCX with Office 2007. A DOCX is a ZIP of XML files describing text, styles, tables, images, comments and tracked changes, standardized as ISO Office Open XML. It is the default exchange format for editable documents, accepted by Word, Google Docs, Pages, LibreOffice and most online forms.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which RTF Files Can I Convert?

RTF files from any program that writes Rich Text are supported.

WordPad and TextEdit

RTF documents from Windows and Mac's built-in editors.

Business system exports

RTF reports from medical, legal, accounting and CRM software.

RTF with pictures

Embedded images are kept, and the DOCX is usually much smaller.

Tables and lists

Tables, bullets and numbering carry over.

A batch

Upload several RTFs and download the DOCX files as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

DOCX Not Looking Right?

RTF is an old format, so a few differences are possible.

01

Fonts changed

Fonts that aren't available are replaced with similar ones. Install the original font or choose a standard one in Word.

02

Spacing looks different

RTF spacing rules differ slightly from Word's. Adjust paragraph spacing in Word.

03

A complex table shifted

Very old or unusual RTF tables can lose some column widths. Resize the columns in Word.

04

The DOCX is much smaller

That's normal. RTF stores pictures as text-encoded data, while DOCX compresses them.

05

Special characters look wrong

RTF from old systems may use legacy code pages. Check accented characters after converting.

06

Still not working

Open the RTF in WordPad or TextEdit to check it isn't damaged.
