SOURCE

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so re-saving never degrades it. It supports full alpha transparency and 8 or 16 bits per channel, which makes it the standard for logos, UI graphics, screenshots and images that will be edited again. Photos as PNG are much larger than the same photo as JPG.

TARGET

AVIF

The Alliance for Open Media released AVIF in 2019. It stores images with AV1 compression, supports transparency, HDR and 10 or 12-bit color, and typically produces files around half the size of a comparable JPG. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show it, but many editors, CMS plugins and older devices still can't.

TROUBLESHOOTING

AVIF Not Working as Expected?

AVIF is new, so support varies.

01

An app won't open the AVIF

Older software, some CMS plugins and print services don't support AVIF yet. Keep the original for those.

02

Old browsers show nothing

Very old browsers lack AVIF support. Use a picture element with a JPG or WebP fallback.

03

Encoding took a while

AV1 compression is slower than JPG or WebP, especially for large images.

04

Fine red or blue details look soft

Lossy AVIF usually stores color at a lower resolution than brightness, which can soften small, strongly colored details.

05

Small text looks soft

Lossy AVIF can soften very fine text in screenshots. Keep PNG for pixel-perfect UI images.

06

Still not working

Check the PNG opens normally before converting.
