Adobe introduced the Portable Document Format in 1993, and it has been an open ISO standard since 2008. A PDF fixes text, fonts, images and vector graphics onto pages, so a document prints and displays exactly as intended on any device. It is the default for sharing, printing, signing and archiving.
TARGET
EPUB is maintained by the W3C and is built from HTML, CSS and images packed in a ZIP file. The text reflows to fit any screen, readers can change the font and size, and chapters appear in a table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most e-readers use it, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.
