HOW IT WORKS

Convert ORF to JPG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your ORF files

Drag in ORF photos from your OM-D, PEN or OM System camera's card or a photo backup. You can add a whole shoot at once.

02

Convert to JPG

Start the conversion. Each RAW file is developed with LibRaw, an open-source RAW decoder used by many photo apps, and saved as JPG.

03

Download the JPG files

Download each JPG as it finishes or the whole set as one ZIP. Your original ORF files stay untouched on your device.

ORF

ORF is the RAW format of Olympus and OM System cameras, including the OM-D, PEN and OM-1 series.

JPG

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

FILE FORMATS

ORF and JPG compared

SOURCE

ORF

Olympus RAW Format comes from Micro Four Thirds bodies such as the OM-D E-M1, E-M5 and E-M10, the PEN range and the newer OM System OM-1 and OM-5. The files are smaller than full-frame RAW because the sensor is smaller. Olympus Picture Modes and Art Filters are applied in the camera's JPEG only, not to the ORF data.

TARGET

JPG

The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

USE CASES

Use Cases for ORF to JPG

When a JPG works better than the original RAW file.

logo

Share without OM Workspace

Send JPGs from an E-M10, E-M5 or E-M1 shoot to anyone, without Olympus software.

logo

Get JPGs from a RAW-only card

If the camera was set to RAW only, convert the ORF files to get everyday copies.

logo

Post birding and wildlife shots

Micro Four Thirds bodies are popular for long lenses. Post the best frames as JPG.

logo

Upload travel photos

Small OM-D and PEN cameras travel well. Share the photos online as JPG.

logo

Print at a lab

Photo labs need JPG files. Convert the ORF files you want printed.

logo

Open an old Olympus archive

ORF files from an E-PL1 or E-M5 become JPGs that work on any device.

logo

Preview a card on a laptop

Check a shoot on a computer without RAW software.

logo

Send to a camera club or competition

Most clubs and competitions want JPG entries.

logo

Add photos to a blog or website

CMS platforms take JPG uploads, not ORF.

logo

Proof a session

Share JPG proofs and edit only the ORF files you keep.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which ORF Files Can I Convert?

ORF files from Olympus and OM System Micro Four Thirds cameras are supported.

OM-D series

E-M1, E-M5 and E-M10 files in every generation convert directly.

PEN series

E-P, E-PL and PEN-F files convert the same way.

OM System bodies

OM-1 and OM-5 files are ORF too, but they are newer than our RAW decoder's camera list and may need the DNG workaround below.

Older Olympus DSLRs and compacts

Four Thirds E-series DSLRs and RAW-capable Stylus and Tough compacts also wrote ORF.

A whole card

Add every ORF from a shoot and download the JPGs together as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

ORF Photo Not Looking Right?

These explain most differences between the JPG and the camera's preview.

01

The colors don't match the camera's preview

The camera screen shows a JPEG made with your Picture Mode or Art Filter. The JPG is developed without it, so tweak color and contrast in any photo editor if you want that look back.

02

The photo looks flat or a little dark

RAW files are developed with neutral contrast so no highlight or shadow detail is thrown away. Add contrast or brightness in an editor, or edit the ORF in a RAW editor if you need precise control.

03

My Lightroom edits are missing

Edits live in your editor's catalog or an .xmp sidecar file, not in the ORF. Export from that editor to get the edited version.

04

A file from a brand-new camera won't convert

Each new camera model tweaks its RAW data, and decoders need an update to read it. If a ORF from a very recent body fails, convert it to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter and use our DNG to JPG tool.

05

It says the file is damaged

This usually means the ORF was cut off while copying from the card. Copy it again from the original card or backup. A file that opens as a tiny preview in other apps is often incomplete too.

06

A High Res Shot looks different

High Res Shot combines several exposures into a larger ORF. Some decoders read these merged files differently, so check the result and use OM Workspace if it doesn't look right.
