HOW IT WORKS

Convert OGV to MP4 in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Add your OGV files

Drag in the .ogv videos you want to play or edit as MP4.

02

Convert to H.264 and AAC

Theora or VP8 video is re-encoded to H.264 at high quality, and Vorbis or Opus sound becomes AAC.

03

Download the MP4

Download each MP4 as it finishes, or all of them together as a ZIP.

OGV

OGV is the Ogg video file from the Xiph.Org Foundation, usually with Theora video and Vorbis or Opus sound. It is used for open web video, for example on Wikimedia Commons, by older Linux screen recorders and by game engines such as Godot. Safari, iPhones, most TVs and many video editors do not play it.

MP4

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format. With H.264 video and AAC sound, as made here, it plays on iPhone and Android phones, smart TVs, Windows and Mac, every modern browser, and imports into common video editors.

FILE FORMATS

OGV and MP4 compared

SOURCE

OGV

OGV is video in Xiph.Org's Ogg container, normally Theora video with Vorbis sound. It was the open, royalty-free web video format of the late 2000s and is still found in Wikimedia Commons archives, Linux screen recordings and open-source game cutscenes. Safari, iPhone and most editors don't play it.

TARGET

MP4

MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.

USE CASES

Use Cases for OGV to MP4

Practical workflows where OGV to MP4 conversion is useful.

logo

Reuse Wikimedia Commons videos

Videos downloaded from Wikimedia Commons as .ogv become MP4 for slides, lessons or an edit.

logo

Share old Linux screen recordings

Screen recorders such as recordMyDesktop saved .ogv files. As MP4 they play for anyone you send them to.

logo

Play on iPhone and Safari

Apple devices do not play Ogg Theora. The H.264 MP4 plays on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

logo

Edit in common video editors

Premiere Pro, iMovie and phone editors do not import Theora video. The MP4 imports directly.

logo

Preview game cutscenes

Godot projects and many indie games store cutscenes and trailers as Ogg Theora. Convert them to MP4 to preview, share or post a trailer.

logo

Rescue video from old HTML5 sites

Early HTML5 websites served Ogg video. Convert those files to MP4 when you move the site to a new platform.

logo

Upload to platforms that reject .ogv

Social networks, learning platforms and chat apps that expect MP4 accept the converted file.

logo

Use open courseware videos

Lectures published as .ogv by universities and open-source projects become MP4 for a course page or an offline playlist.

logo

Keep surround sound

A Theora video with 5.1 Vorbis sound gets 5.1 AAC sound, so the surround channels are kept.

logo

Send clips in chat apps

Messaging apps preview MP4 inline. Convert the .ogv clip first and send it as a normal video.

SUPPORTED FILES

Wikimedia Commons videos

Archived OGV files.

Linux screen recordings

Recordings saved as .ogv.

Game cutscenes

A batch

Upload several OGVs and download the MP4s as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

MP4 Not Playing Right?

These explain most differences from the original file.

01

The picture looks soft

Many OGV files were made at low resolution. The MP4 keeps that resolution.

02

There's no sound

Some OGV files are video only.

03

A Safari user couldn't play the OGV

That's why MP4 helps: Safari and iPhone play it natively.

04

Audio-only .ogg files aren't accepted

Use an OGG audio converter for sound-only files.

05

The MP4 is a different size

Re-encoded video at high quality can be larger or smaller than the original, depending on how it was compressed.

06

It says the file can't be read

The file is damaged, protected or not really the format its name says. Copy it again from the source.
