HOW IT WORKS

Convert NEF to JPG in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your NEF files

Drag in NEF photos from your Nikon's SD, CFexpress or XQD card, a card reader or a backup. You can add a whole shoot at once.

02

Convert to JPG

Start the conversion. Each RAW file is developed with LibRaw, an open-source RAW decoder used by many photo apps, and saved as JPG.

03

Download the JPG files

Download each JPG as it finishes or the whole set as one ZIP. Your original NEF files stay untouched on your device.

NEF

NEF is Nikon's RAW format, used by every Nikon DSLR and by the Z-series mirrorless cameras.

JPG

JPG is the most widely supported photo format, with lossy compression that keeps files small.

FILE FORMATS

NEF and JPG compared

SOURCE

NEF

Nikon Electronic Format is the RAW file every Nikon DSLR and Z camera writes, from the D70 era to the D850, Z6 and Z8. Depending on the body it can be uncompressed, lossless compressed or lossy compressed. It stores the sensor data and the Picture Control you picked, but only Nikon's own software applies that Picture Control when developing.

TARGET

JPG

The format every phone, browser, printer kiosk and social site accepts. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice, so a 24 MP picture fits in a few megabytes. It has no transparency and only 8 bits per color channel, and every re-save loses a little more quality.

USE CASES

Use Cases for NEF to JPG

When a JPG works better than the original RAW file.

logo

Share without NX Studio

Send JPGs from a D750, D7500 or Z6 shoot to people who don't have Nikon's software.

logo

Recover viewable copies from a RAW-only card

If image quality was set to NEF only, convert the files to get JPGs for everyday use.

logo

Open a decade of Nikon archives

Old NEF folders from a D90, D300 or D3100 become JPGs that open on any device.

logo

Upload sports or wildlife picks quickly

Convert the best frames from a long burst and post them the same day.

logo

Print at a lab

Online labs and kiosks take JPG. Convert just the frames you're printing.

logo

Post to social media

Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp don't accept NEF uploads.

logo

Preview on a work computer

Check a shoot on a laptop where you can't install a RAW editor.

logo

Send photos to a newspaper or club

Editors, camera clubs and competitions usually ask for JPG submissions.

logo

Make a digital frame slideshow

Digital frames and TVs read JPG from a USB stick or card.

logo

Give a client proofs

Share JPG proofs, then edit only the NEF files the client chooses.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which NEF Files Can I Convert?

NEF files from Nikon DSLRs, Z cameras and RAW-capable Coolpix models are supported.

Nikon DSLRs

D3000 to D850, D500, D7000-series, D600/D610, D750 and the D3, D4, D5 and D6 pro bodies.

Z mirrorless

Z6, Z7 and Z50 NEF files convert directly. Newer Z bodies may need the DNG workaround below.

Coolpix compacts

RAW-capable Coolpix models such as the P1000 and P7800 also write NEF.

Uncompressed, lossless or lossy NEF

All standard NEF compression options upload the same way.

A whole shoot

Add every NEF from a card and download the JPGs together as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

NEF Photo Not Looking Right?

Most differences come from how RAW files are developed.

01

The colors don't match the camera's preview

The camera screen shows a JPEG made with your Picture Control. The JPG is developed without it, so tweak color and contrast in any photo editor if you want that look back.

02

The photo looks flat or a little dark

RAW files are developed with neutral contrast so no highlight or shadow detail is thrown away. Add contrast or brightness in an editor, or edit the NEF in a RAW editor if you need precise control.

03

My Lightroom edits are missing

Edits live in your editor's catalog or an .xmp sidecar file, not in the NEF. Export from that editor to get the edited version.

04

A file from a brand-new camera won't convert

Each new camera model tweaks its RAW data, and decoders need an update to read it. If a NEF from a very recent body fails, convert it to DNG with the free Adobe DNG Converter and use our DNG to JPG tool. Nikon's High Efficiency RAW, used by the Z8 and Z9, may not be readable.

05

It says the file is damaged

This usually means the NEF was cut off while copying from the card. Copy it again from the original card or backup. A file that opens as a tiny preview in other apps is often incomplete too.

06

Active D-Lighting isn't visible

Active D-Lighting brightens shadows in the camera's JPEG only. Lift the shadows in an editor to get a similar result.
