MXF
MXF (Material Exchange Format) is the professional file format used by broadcast cameras such as Sony XDCAM and XAVC models and by Avid editing systems. It wraps video such as XAVC, DNxHD, ProRes, MPEG-2 or DV together with timecode and separate mono sound tracks, one per microphone.
MP4
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely supported video format. With H.264 video and AAC sound, as made here, it plays on iPhone and Android phones, smart TVs, Windows and Mac, every modern browser, and imports into common video editors.
FILE FORMATS
SOURCE
Material Exchange Format is the professional container written by Sony XAVC and XDCAM, Canon Cinema EOS, Panasonic P2 and ARRI cameras and by broadcast servers. It usually holds high-bitrate XAVC, AVC-Intra, DNxHD or MPEG-2 video with each microphone channel as a separate PCM track. Consumer players and phones can't open it.
TARGET
MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.

MXF stores each microphone as a separate track. Keep the MXF for multi-track editing and use the MP4 for review.

Pro codecs use very high bitrates. H.264 at high quality is far smaller for review copies.

MXF timecode doesn't carry into the MP4. Keep the MXF for editing.

Log footage, such as S-Log or C-Log, looks flat until it's graded. Apply a LUT in your editor.

Re-encoded video at high quality can be larger or smaller than the original, depending on how it was compressed.

The file is damaged, protected or not really the format its name says. Copy it again from the source.
