FILE FORMATS

MP4 and WAV compared

SOURCE

MP4

MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.

TARGET

WAV

Microsoft and IBM defined WAV in 1991. It normally stores plain PCM audio with no compression, which is why editors, DAWs, broadcast systems and speech tools accept it without question. The price is size: CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute, and tagging support is limited.

Screen recordings

A batch

TROUBLESHOOTING

WAV Not Working as Expected?

These explain most of the surprises.

01

The WAV is huge

WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo. That is normal.

02

There are silent gaps

Gaps in the video's sound are filled with silence so the WAV lines up with the video.

03

The commentary track is missing

Only the default track, otherwise the first, is extracted. Other language or commentary tracks are not included.

04

It says the video has no audio track

The MP4 has no sound, or its audio format can't be decoded.

05

A recorded meeting has only one speaker loud

Meeting apps mix participants differently. Adjust levels in an audio editor after converting.

06

Still not working

Check that the MP4 plays. A damaged file gives only the audio that can be decoded.
