MD and HTML compared

SOURCE

MD

John Gruber created Markdown in 2004 so text could be readable as written and convertible to HTML. Headings start with #, lists with - or 1., and links use [text](url). GitHub, documentation sites, note apps like Obsidian and many static site generators use Markdown, usually with extras such as tables and fenced code blocks.

TARGET

HTML

HyperText Markup Language structures every web page. An HTML file marks text as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, tables and images, and any browser displays it without extra software. It is also what blogs, CMS editors, email builders and help-desk tools paste or import.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which MD Files Can I Convert?

Markdown files from editors, wikis and code projects are supported.

Standard Markdown

Headings, emphasis, lists, links, images and block quotes.

GitHub-style tables and code blocks

Pipe tables and fenced code blocks become HTML tables and code.

Obsidian and note-app exports

Notes saved as .md files.

Inline HTML

HTML written inside the Markdown passes through.

A batch

Upload several Markdown files and download the HTML files as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

HTML Not Looking Right?

These are the usual causes.

01

Images are missing

Images referenced by a local path, such as ./img/photo.png, aren't uploaded with the Markdown. Use full image URLs, or upload the images to your site and update the paths.

02

The page looks plain

The HTML carries structure, not a theme. Your website or CMS styles it.

03

Wiki links show as plain text

Obsidian-style [[wiki links]] aren't standard Markdown. Convert them to normal [text](link) links.

04

A table didn't convert

Check that the table has a header row and a separator line of dashes.

05

Line breaks disappeared

In Markdown, lines that follow each other join into one paragraph. Leave a blank line between paragraphs, or end a line with two spaces to force a break.

06

Still not working

Check the file is saved as UTF-8 text with a .md extension.
