HOW IT WORKS

Convert M4A to M4R in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload the M4A

Drag and drop your M4A files or select them from your device. To use a part other than the start, trim the M4A first.

02

Convert to M4R

Keep M4R as the output and start. The first 30 seconds become an AAC ringtone.

03

Download the ringtone

Save the .m4r file, then add it to your iPhone through Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows.

M4A

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 file, usually holding AAC audio and sometimes Apple Lossless. iPhone Voice Memos, iTunes Store purchases and many phone recorders save .m4a files.

M4R

M4R is the iPhone ringtone format: AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, the same as an .m4a file but with a different extension so iTunes, Finder and iPhone treat it as a ringtone. iPhone ringtones can be up to 40 seconds long, and text or alert tones up to 30 seconds.

FILE FORMATS

SOURCE

M4A

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file, usually AAC and sometimes Apple Lossless, with iTunes-style tags and album art. It is the format of iTunes Store music, iPhone voice memos and Apple Music libraries, and Android, Windows and browsers play it too. At the same bitrate, AAC in M4A sounds better than MP3.

TARGET

M4R

M4R is the iPhone ringtone format: an AAC file in an MPEG-4 container with a different extension, so iOS lists it under Ringtones. Ringtones are short, and Apple caps them at 40 seconds. You add them to an iPhone through Finder, iTunes or GarageBand.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which M4A Files Can I Convert?

M4A songs and recordings are supported.

iTunes and Apple Music purchases

DRM-free M4A tracks from the iTunes Store.

Voice memos

iPhone voice memos are M4A, so a recording can become a ringtone.

GarageBand exports

Songs you made and shared as M4A.

Short clips

A track under 30 seconds becomes a ringtone of its full length.

Several tracks

Upload a few M4A files and download the ringtones as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Ringtone Not Showing Up?

Most problems come from how the ringtone is added to the iPhone.

01

The ringtone isn't in Settings

Add the .m4r through Finder or iTunes with the iPhone connected, or save it to Files and import it with GarageBand.

02

The wrong part of the song plays

The ringtone always starts at the beginning. Trim the M4A to the part you want first.

03

It ends with a fade

Tracks longer than 30 seconds get a fade-out at the end so the ringtone doesn't cut off abruptly.

04

An Apple Music song won't convert

Songs downloaded from Apple Music are protected. Use a track you own DRM-free.

05

It plays too quietly

Quiet songs make quiet ringtones. Pick a louder section or raise the volume in an editor first.

06

Still not working

Check that the file ends in .m4r after downloading, and that your iPhone is up to date.
