FILE FORMATS
SOURCE
Windows uses ICO files for program and folder icons, and websites use them as favicons. One ICO can carry many versions of the icon, commonly 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels, each stored as a small bitmap or a PNG. That lets Windows pick the sharpest size for each place the icon appears.
TARGET
PNG stores every pixel exactly, so re-saving never degrades it. It supports full alpha transparency and 8 or 16 bits per channel, which makes it the standard for logos, UI graphics, screenshots and images that will be edited again. Photos as PNG are much larger than the same photo as JPG.
