HOW IT WORKS

Convert H265 to MP4 in three steps

Three steps, no account, nothing to install.

01

Upload your H265 file

Drag in the .h265 file from your camera, NVR or DVR. The recording type is detected from its contents, not its name.

02

Convert to MP4

Start the conversion. The H.265 video is copied into an MP4 and tagged hvc1, and the sound is converted to AAC when needed.

03

Download the MP4

Download one MP4 per file. The video stays H.265, so play it on an Apple device or in a player with HEVC support.

H265

An .h265 file holds H.265 (HEVC) video, usually as a bare stream with no container, or inside a recorder's own framing. Newer IP cameras, NVRs and DVRs use H.265 because it needs much less space than H.264 for the same picture, but most players cannot open the raw file.

MP4

MP4 is the most widely supported video container. With H.265 video tagged hvc1, it plays on iPhone and Mac, in Safari, and in other players with HEVC support. Firefox, older TVs and Windows PCs without HEVC support cannot show the picture.

FILE FORMATS

H265 and MP4 compared

SOURCE

H265

.h265 holds a raw HEVC elementary stream with no container: the compressed picture only. Newer NVRs, 4K IP cameras, drones and hardware encoders write it. HEVC is roughly twice as efficient as H.264, but a bare stream carries no timing or sound, and many apps can't open it at all.

TARGET

MP4

MPEG-4 Part 14 is the default container for phone recordings, web video and streaming. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on iPhone and Android, in every browser, on smart TVs and in Windows and Mac players without extra codecs. It holds text subtitles and chapters, but not picture-based subtitles.

USE CASES

Use Cases for H265 to MP4

Practical workflows where H265 to MP4 conversion is useful.

logo

Watch high-resolution camera footage on iPhone

H.265 cameras record high-resolution video in small files. The MP4 is tagged hvc1, so it plays on iPhone, Mac and in Safari.

logo

Keep the small file size

The video is copied, not re-encoded, so the MP4 stays about as small as the H.265 original instead of growing into a larger H.264 file.

logo

Open IP camera SD card recordings

Cameras that record H.265 to an SD card (HXVT) keep the camera's time for every frame, so pauses play at their real length with the sound in sync.

logo

Check a camera that records at night

SD-card (HXVT) recordings from cameras that drop to a lower frame rate in the dark keep each frame's recorded time in the MP4, so a night clip plays at its real length.

logo

Convert Xiongmai and XMeye recordings

H.265 recordings from Xiongmai-based recorders become a standard MP4, with their G.711 sound turned into AAC.

logo

Play Dahua H.265 files

Dahua DHAV files with H.265 video are copied into an MP4, and AAC sound from the camera is kept as it is.

logo

Show footage to an investigator

The MP4 plays on iPhone and Mac without extra software, so an officer or claims handler with an Apple device can review the clip right away.

logo

Archive footage at its recorded quality

Keep the whole recording, with every frame and the original resolution, in a standard MP4 container instead of a raw stream.

logo

Wrap a raw encoder stream

A raw .h265 stream from a camera's encoder has no container, so players reject it. In an MP4 it opens with the frame rate taken from the stream, or 25 fps when the stream states none.

logo

Rescue a partly copied export

If a copy from the recorder was cut off part-way through, the MP4 starts at the first complete picture, so the rest of the clip is still usable.

SUPPORTED FILES

Which H265 Files Can I Convert?

Recordings from DVRs, NVRs, IP cameras and dashcams are supported.

Raw HEVC streams

From NVRs, 4K IP cameras and encoders.

Vendor-framed recordings

Recorder framing is removed.

.hevc files renamed .h265

Converted the same way.

Recordings with camera sound

G.711 and ADPCM sound becomes AAC.

Several clips

Upload a batch and download the MP4s as a ZIP.

TROUBLESHOOTING

MP4 Not Playing Right?

Most problems come from how the recorder exported the clip.

01

It says the recording is encrypted

Some recorders encrypt exports. Export the clip again with encryption turned off.

02

It says the file has no video

The export may be empty, all zeros or audio-only. Export the clip again from the recorder.

03

Parts of the picture are garbled

Damaged spots lose frames up to the next key frame. The rest of the recording is kept.

04

An editor stutters on the clip

CCTV footage often has a variable frame rate, which some editors handle less well. VLC and browsers play it smoothly.

05

Windows won't play the MP4

Windows needs Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions. VLC and most browsers play it.

06

A bare stream plays too fast or slow

A raw stream with no timing plays at 25 fps.
